    Homefront: The Revolution is already a big improvement on the original

    New gameplay and new impressions of Dambuster Studio's sequel.

    THQ and Kaos Studios' Homefront was certainly interesting. Taking a premise co-opted from John Milius' Red Dawn - and Milius helped with the scenario on the game, perhaps - its redneck fantasy of an America invaded by Korean militia had a gritty, homespun appeal. Homefront did reasonably well - coming out when Call of Duty fever was at a high, a timely release date away from the Q4 churn helped it shift in excess of two million units - and THQ saw enough potential in its set-up to fast-track a sequel.

    Essential | Rare Replay review

    Well done.

    With this hardware generation seemingly locked into a cycle of re-releases and remasters, it takes a certain stroke of genius to make a common or garden compilation appealing. Generous to a fault, and stuffed with more than its fair share of stone cold timeless classics, Rare Replay hits the bullseye.

    Winging it.

    By declaring the 13th game in a series to be the first proper sequel, Rovio is clearly taking cues from established spin-off factories like Capcom and Square. To its credit, Finnish mobile giant Rovio has actually crafted something that feels like a genuine step forwards for the Angry Birds games as well, introducing new elements that shake up the gameplay in smart ways. It's also, sadly, become much more aggressive in the way it tugs at your purse strings.

  16. N++ review

    Ninjitsu-per.

    It's not much of a life as an N++ ninja. Temporally speaking, as much as anything. A lack of height and surplus of speed has resulted in a bluebottle-like metabolism: your life expectancy is just 90 seconds. And that minute and a half is pretty grueling stuff. You can't afford to spare any microseconds on appreciating the finer things in life, luxuriating in a warm ninja bath, for example, or absentmindedly dipping a shuriken in a '47 Cheval Blanc. Nope, you have but one heroically single-minded ambition: "the need," as the game puts it, "to traverse a series of five rooms before the end of your lifetime." It's not all bad news though. Each of these rooms contains a glitter cannon spattering of gold pieces, every one of which increases your lifespan by two seconds - about 20 months in civilian years.
