Digital Foundry | Uncharted 2's PS4 teaser leaves us hungry for more
Digital Foundry's initial impressions and analysis on Bluepoint's Nathan Drake Collection remastering work.
While there are legitimate concerns that the sheer volume of remasters hitting the current-gen consoles is starting to verge on the ridiculous, we've still got a lot of time for Sony's continuing efforts in bringing PlayStation 3 glory days to its latest console platform. The Last of Us Remastered worked beautifully overall, God of War 3's 1080p60 presentation is excellent, and our first look - more of a glimpse really - of the Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection is also heavy with promise. Right now, from our perspective, all that's missing from the line-up is a Killzone 2/3 release.

Happy birthday!
Ah, the Amiga. Dear readers of a certain age will remember it well. I was a little late to the party; when I think of Amiga I think of my Amiga 1200 and swapping between 5000 floppy disks - yes, disk with a k - while playing The Secret of Monkey Island 2. Those who owned one will will have their own fond memories.

Review | Tower of Guns review
Friendly spire.
The gun remains the most heavily relied upon tool in video games, and perhaps it will always be this way. Guns excel and dominate on the interactive small screen. They allow us to interact with objects near (the lunging zombie) and far (the high wall-mounted switch) with an ease and speed only rivalled by the bow and arrow (which, alas, doesn't provide quite the same racket or variation as its modern descendant). Invention is rare. Perfect Dark presented us with a gun that could peer and reach through walls; Half-Life 2 a gun that could slurp up loose objects and, with a reversal of gravity, spit them out again as impromptu bullets; Portal a gun that could create shortcuts in the fabric of space and time. But these are outliers. Elsewhere, the evolution of the video game gun follows that of its real world counterpart, a dour and constant sprint to improve its rate, recoil and impact.

Digital Foundry | The re-engineering of Ethan Carter
Digital Foundry talks to The Astronauts about the transition to PS4 and the move to Unreal Engine 4.
Unreal Engine 3 enjoyed a long, prosperous life on last-gen following its 2006 debut, but the new UE4 has yet to hit its stride in the new console gaming era. We're almost two years into the current generation, but by our reckoning, only five UE4 games are now available on PS4 and Xbox One. Without Epic itself setting the bar this time around, there's the sense that we haven't seen the engine at its best. However, with the release of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Polish development team The Astronauts might well be the first studio to deliver on the powerful middleware's latent potential.

Feature | Guild of Dungeoneering: an RPG where you play as the difficulty curve
Sketchy.
The classes in Guild of Dungeoneering are pretty weird: there's the Cat Burglar, for example, who talks about lobbing kitties at her foes, and there's the Shapeshifter, who longs to be able to transform into a bag of silver coins. But far weirder is the role that the player is truly lumbered with for much of the adventure. I've been playing Guild of Dungeoneering on and off for a week, and I've only recently spotted it: this is an RPG where you play as the game balancing.
