Feature | What we've been playing

A few of the things that have us hooked this week.

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've found ourselves playing over the last few days. This will be our last What We've Been Playing of the year - of 2023 - which means when we come back in January, we'll be able to talk about what we played, or what we did not manage to play, during the end of year break. That's exciting isn't it? Anyway! This week, it's a mixture of Indonesian coming of age stories, retro remade Zeldas, and small lakeside towns.

Podcast | The meteoric rise of A Plague Tale's Charlotte McBurney

Amicia, Final Fantasy 16, and beyond.

A Plague Tale: Requiem was one of my favourite games of last year. You might have noticed I recorded - and wrote - a whole Making Of A Plague Tale feature earlier this year. Well, I also spoke to the standout star of it - Charlotte McBurney - who plays Amicia in the game. We spoke shortly before she found out whether she'd won the Performer in a Lead Role BAFTA, which sadly she didn't - Kratos' Christopher Judge did. Nor did I manage to publish our conversation, because this year has been very busy. But now there's a bit of quiet, I'm returning to it, to release it as something of a Christmas gift.

  12. avatar frontiers of pandora key art

Avatar is a beautiful game that pushes technology hard to enable some truly amazing visuals - but how can we scale that experience down to a solid 60fps experience that still looks good on older and slower PCs? To figure out optimised settings, I'll discuss the game's PC user experience, compare the game against the PS5 version for some performance optimisation hints and evaluate some of those 'Unobtainium' settings intended for future hardware.

  20. tekken 8 key art

Digital Foundry | Tekken 8 tech preview: the first fighting game based on Unreal Engine 5

Early impressions are positive in terms of visuals, input lag and more.

As 2023 comes to a close, I think it's fair to say that the fighting game genre is in a great spot. Capcom and NetherRealm both launched stellar new entries in their respective franchises this year, with Street Fighter 6 in particular righting the wrongs of the previous numbered entry. In January of 2024, Bandi-Namco will unleash Tekken 8 - and I've played a near-final version of the game at an event, so I wanted to share my initial thoughts. This the first new fighting game to ship on Unreal Engine 5 while also skipping last-gen consoles and the Switch - so how does it fare thus far?

  24. The Finals key art showing a character in protective gear holding up a pistol, against a bright red background

When you kill someone in The Finals, they explode in a shower of coins, their body scattering across the ground like a tub of popcorn dropped by King Midas. As with much else about the Finals, this wowed me when I first saw it. What an ingenious way to depict death in a multiplayer shooter, I thought. It's spectacular without being grisly, satisfying without being gross. Don't get me wrong, I'm a sicko for virtual gore. But this seemed like a smart, clean alternative.
