How does a woolly Yoshi Amiibo stand up? It's something that Eurogamer's Wesley Yin-Poole likes to ask me when he thinks he is being funny. The truth, of course, is that there is more than wool to the little toys - a structure hidden beneath the surface. Yoshi's Woolly World, the game that those toys work with, is similar. Its exterior hides something else as well, although the answer to what lies beneath is a little more complicated.

Call of Duty Black Ops 3: side-stepping the inevitable comparisons with Titanfall
Wall-runs, power slides and mini-gun wielding robots.
Last year, there were no shortage of comparisons being made between Titanfall, with its robots and athletic jet-boosting soldiers, and Advanced Warfare, Sledgehammer's Call of Duty that introduced an exoskeleton and double-jumping into Activision's long-running series. This year, those comparisons will come thicker and faster. Black Ops 3, with its augmented soldiers and wall-running, is a departure for the series that on first play feels very, very familiar.

Review | Broken Age Act 2 review
Breaking good?
Editor's note: Broken Age's second and final act is out this week. We reviewed the first act of Tim Schafer and Double Fine's return to adventure games early last year, and found it attractive but a little hollow. "Fans will be forgiven for expecting something a little more chewy, a little more experimental, from a developer who made his name by turning adventure games upside down," Dan Whitehead said in his review. Today, Dan returns to the second act to see what's changed. Be warned - spoilers and discussion for act one lay below.

Dirt Rally could well be Codemasters' first real sim
What Early Access, PC exclusivity and going hardcore means for the series.
Dirt Rally isn't Dirt 4, in name at least. It's not on console - yet - and even though you can play it today it's no way near finished. Once you've got through the muddle of emotions all of that inspires, it's worth considering this: Dirt's new direction, which goes well beyond what fans have been calling for, is the best thing that's happened to rally games for years.

Feature | The twin tales of Forge, Loom's forgotten follow-up and its fan-made sequel
Fruits of the Loom.
When Gabriele Nannetti agreed to work on Forge , he was entirely unaware of what the project entailed. The soft-spoken Italian game designer, known online as Abisso, responded to a forum post by a Canadian named Duke Davidson, requesting aid from volunteer programmers, artists, sound engineers and so on for a new project. "He didn't mention anything about Loom," Nanetti says. "He wanted some help on game designing, because he wasn't very experienced."

Feature | Remembering Loom, the adventure game designed to be completed
Delicately woven.
After signing up to write this retrospective, it dawned on me that I might not have time to replay Loom. I looked at my schedule and saw that I'd left myself a single evening in which to struggle through a 90s LucasArts adventure. You know, those games notorious for their fiendishly difficult puzzles and dozens of red herrings. I still have nightmares about that forest in Grim Fandango.

Feature | How Neverending Nightmares diminished its creator's nightmares
Sales figures revealed. New game teased.
Matt Gilgenbach's semi-autobiographic mental madhouse Neverending Nightmares was borne of tragedy. After Gilgenbach and his development partner Justin Wilder spent $140K and four years of 40-hour work weeks on the rhythm-action shmup hybrid Retro/Grade, the game sold so poorly that it failed to break even. This led Gilgenbach into a deep depression, so he decided to make a game about his horrifying intrusive thoughts called Neverending Nightmares. It's a risky proposition to make a game about your darkest, most disturbing thoughts, but by creating it Gilgenbach managed to save himself from the funk that he was in, both mentally and financially.
