Harbour jealousy.
Survival horror fans have been treated in recent years with the revival of classic games in the genre. Resident Evil has led the charge, with the likes of Dead Space and Silent Hill following. Now, developer Pieces Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic hope their Alone in the Dark reimagining can follow suit, and deliver a fresh-feeling experience for a modern audience while sticking closer to the survival horror genre's roots than perhaps we've seen recently.

Feature | 25 years ago, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time became more than a game
Notes from a Ford Orion.
The most vivid memory I have of childhood is sitting in the back of our dirty red Ford Orion on a violet-hued winter evening. Orange beads wash in from passing streetlights and throw chevrons of illumination across me and the boxes I hold close to my body. It's March 1999, we're returning from Norwich with my eighth birthday present, a large box I insist on holding, with a red vertical banner down its face, holding a Nintendo 64. Nestled between it and my chest, where it can't fall, is a smaller box - black and gold - inside of which is a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Digital Foundry | The Orange Box modded to run at 4K 60fps on Xbox Series X is the best way to play on consoles
A final flourish for a gaming classic - but there's a catch.
The Orange Box was one of the greatest deals in gaming on its release in 2007. Cramming five Valve-developed classics onto one disc - Half Life 2, Half Life 2 Episode 1, Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, and introducing the original Portal - the quality bar was supremely high. Originally shipping on the 360 at native 720p resolution, Xbox One X enhancements delivered a 9x resolution increase, offering up a native 4K presentation that naturally transitioned over to Series X and thanks to some config file tweakery, it's now possible to remove the 30fps cap, to play Valve's finest at 60fps on Xbox Series X and Series S hardware.

Feature | Doom at 30: how a LAN session changed my life
Big Red redemption.
It was a warm Saturday morning in the summer of 1994. I was working at Big Red Software, a video game developer then based in Southam, Warwickshire, just up the road from Codemasters. Naturally, we'd already played Doom, which had been released a few months before and was still the hottest game in the world. Our programmer Fred Williams bought a copy of the shareware version in the Game store on Leamington high street - you could download it for free, but back then the internet was super slow and super expensive, unlike Game, which was convenient and super expensive. Indeed one of the cleverest business decisions John Romero made was allowing software companies with already established retail channels to box up and sell Shareware Doom at no charge from Id Software. It allowed the game to go viral at a time when "going viral" still meant catching chicken pox at your mate's birthday party. As there was no copy protection on the disc, almost as soon as Fred brought it to the office, it was on everyone's computers. We were hooked.

Digital Foundry | Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is one of the most technologically impressive games of the year
Ubisoft Massive's next-gen Snowdrop engine enhancements are simply phenomenal.
What a year it's been for real-time 3D graphics! With Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, we're looking at one of the most visually accomplished releases of 2023, seemingly released without much fanfare. However, when you look at the creators behind the franchise and the game, perhaps we should have expected something special. It's hard to deny the attention to detail that James Cameron has as a creator, not to mention Avatar's reputation for pushing the limits of movie CG. But how do you compress down the blockbuster experience when rendering on a home console? That is where Ubisoft Massive comes in with its superb Snowdrop engine. The tech delivered sensational results on prior titles primarily designed for last-gen hardware, but with a new baseline in technology defined by PC and the latest consoles, Massive has delivered an Avatar game worthy of the name.

Opinion | The Game Awards will never represent our industry in the way it needs, so what next?
"Please wrap it up."
Since their establishment in 2014, The Game Awards have never been wholly welcomed by the wider world of video games, but this year the response has felt if not different, then at least more prominent. There is an undeniable sense, waking up after last night's ceremony-cum-advertisement reel, that developers in particular are deeply frustrated.

Supporters | Game of the Week: A Highland Song is the right kind of slog
Brambles.
I don't know if you've been for a hike recently, but I often feel like I live each hike twice. There's the thinking about the hike - planning it, walking through it in my head - and then there's the actual hike, where shoelaces break, my foot gets stuck in a cattle grate, I realise I forgot something or I read the map wrong. The works.
