See Ian plunder through the eccentric top-down delivery-me-do.
I'm pretty sure the world doesn't need another Hotline Miami-inspired game, but World's Fastest Pizza is at least one of more characterful examples out there. A (pizza) slice of antipodean madness, it's energetic humour and succession of non sequiturs make it fun for a quick bash.

Video | Video: See how Oddworld New 'n' Tasty compares to the original
Mudokon mindphone.
I swear there's a new Oddworld game released every week - or, at least, a new version of an old classic in the series - but as with so much in life I'm definitely wrong. There is a new Oddworld game out this week, though, which is a remake of the very first game in Lorne Lanning's series.

Feature | Here's why you should care about Hyrule Warriors
As Nintendo's offshoot awaits, a genre expert on what makes Koei's Musou games great.
Koei's Musou series is 14 years old. That's older than GTA 3 and Call of Duty (even if you're so inclined to include Medal of Honor: Allied Assault), so at the very least it's a mark of endurance if not some fundamental, unique quality. Starting with a curiously educational setting in ancient China, the series has diversified by shifting its pseudo-historical locales to Japan and Europe. It's even spread into totally separate IP universes, adding manga/anime greats such as Gundam, Fist of the North Star and One Piece. As Nintendo joins in the melee for the upcoming Hyrule Warriors, it looks like the mega-series is about to enter a golden era of wider popular acceptance. What makes the Musou template so great that Nintendo was happy to offer up one its most cherished IPs to the altar of highly iterative en-masse brawling?

Digital Foundry | What if every PC game could run on your tablet?
Digital Foundry presents an alternative vision for the future of mobile gaming.
Windows 8: despised at launch by gamers, written off by Valve's Gabe Newell as a catastrophe for PC gaming. It was the upgrade nobody wanted, or seemingly needed - a misbegotten attempt to meld tablet and desktop interfaces into one OS. Two years on, things are looking up. Microsoft has finally got its act together and in combination with new Intel silicon, some remarkable mobile products are emerging that show the OS in a more favourable light. Indeed, while it won't be the best choice for everyone, Windows 8.1 is swiftly becoming our favourite tablet operating system - mostly because of the tantalising options it offers for the core gamer.

Feature | Every step you take: The story of Minesweeper
Meeting the original minelayers, and those who keep sweeping.
You know Minesweeper, of course. It's video game wallpaper that's silently seeped into countless people's lives. Everyone can recount the basics; the left-mouse button reveals the contents of a tile whilst the right flags a tile as containing a mine. The levels vary from 8x8 grids up to huge 64x64 grids. There's the smiley face when you do well, the gasp of failure and the cross-eyed look of death when you fare slightly worse. The mechanical logic would make a chess grandmaster grin, while bold gamblers still chase quicker and quicker clearance times.

Feature | Super Castlevania 4 proved the best Dracula games don't have to be scary
Fangs for the memories.
When you stop and think about it, it's perhaps a little unusual that Konami's Castlevania - a series primarily concerned with bloodsucking vampires, crumbling gothic fortresses and ghoulish things that go bump in the night - isn't actually that scary at all. There's nothing to compare to the likes of Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Dead Space, no moments where you jump out of your skin or your find yourself fearful of what lies around the next corner. What Castlevania does have in spades is atmosphere; its finest instalments are fondly recalled because in each one the experience as a whole seems to pull together to create a striking impact on the player. There's no finer example of this quality than Super Castlevania 4.

Opinion | You've got male
Marvel just announced that Thor is becoming a woman, but games don't need sex changes to be better at diversity.
One of the key plot points in Jurassic Park revolves around the concept of parthenogenesis: the curious biological miracle in which certain animals can functionally change their gender to compensate for an environment dominated by one gender. "Life", as rock and roll maths whizz Ian Malcolm informs us, "finds a way". Something very similar happened this week over at Marvel Comics, as it was revealed that The Mighty Thor, that most masculine of superheroes, is to become female.

Digital Foundry | Razer Edge review
Crysis 3 on a 10-inch tablet. Believe it.
Your expectations of cutting-edge portable gaming are about to be challenged. With the US launch of the Razer Edge in March and a UK release pending for later this year, we have a device that dares to declare itself all things to all users. On first glance the Edge presents itself as a conventional black-bezeled tablet with a 10.1-inch IPS screen - nothing out of the ordinary, though perhaps a bit over-bulked for the purposes of web browsing and a spot of Angry Birds HD. However, that's because the Edge first and foremost strives to be the most powerful gaming handheld in the market, and it's safe to say that it makes good on that pledge. Crysis 3 on the move? No problem.
