Google Maps has become a mainstay of the modern era to the point where there was a huge uproar when an iOS update once removed the popular app in lieu of Apple's lackluster proprietary navigation program. But Google Maps has done more than just help us get from point A to point B. It's been used in games. Notable examples include GeoGuessr and an April Fools promotional Pokémon pixel hunt, and now Google has released its latest map-based title with the trivia affair Smarty Pins.

Microsoft court order has removed Chess 2: The Sequel's servers
"I'm pretty outraged at Microsoft and the federal government."
After several hundred years Chess finally received a sequel with Chess 2: The Sequel, an asymmetrical variant of the classic game with six armies and a host of new rules in place. Sure it sounds crazy, but that didn't stop our Chris Donlan from being rather smitten by it. The updated version of the classic game premiered in January on Ouya and is slated for an upcoming Steam and iPad release. Only there's now one problem: the game's servers have been shut down following a court order by Microsoft.

Suda 51 details his upcoming "survival action" brawler Let it Die
The ghost in the machine.
What happens when you die in a video game? What do you leave behind? Sometimes it's a bag of loot. Other times it's a number on a leaderboard. And if its a Souls game, it's a hollowed out replay of your final moments. But Suda 51's upcoming arena brawler Let it Die has a different, far more original take on death. When you fall, your player data will manifest itself as an enemy in someone else's game. Your remnants will keep your gear and emulate your general playstyle, only now they'll wreak havoc for any unfortunate souls who stumble upon your untimely final resting place. You become, quite literally, a ghost in the machine.

Digital Foundry | Advanced Warfare is COD's biggest technological leap since Call of Duty 2
The series has evolved, but is the signature 60fps gameplay in jeopardy?
PS4 and Xbox One launch title Call of Duty: Ghosts arguably didn't do enough to show the next-gen difference. Even with tricks such as dynamic lighting and tessellation to show for the generational leap over the last-gen releases, the Xbox One's flat 1280x720 output remains a sore spot in image quality comparisons - and while the PlayStation 4 hits genuine 1080p gold (once patched), frame-rate issues and tearing stand at odds with the fluidity of earlier games on Xbox 360. But more important than the basic rendering metrics is the feeling that Ghosts iterated upon the existing formula as opposed to offering an authentic next-gen vision for the series. With the full unveiling of Advanced Warfare at Microsoft's E3 conference, do we now at last have a sign of true progress in the Call of Duty franchise?
