Why the new Gauntlet is wise to keep things simple
Four's company.
Valkyrie... is about to diet. Enforced dieting. Starvation, you might call it, and it's sort of Valkyrie's fault. Early on in the dungeon, the monsters came slowly and the food was everywhere. Valkyrie gorged. But then things got tougher, her health took a battering, and she was always a second or five too slow to get to the turkey legs whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Evolve's multiplayer hunting entertains, if you play properly
Available worldwide on 21st October.
Evolve wasn't the game I expected. I knew going in that it was an asymmetric FPS from the makers of Left 4 Dead, in which one team of four futuristic hunters chases down and defeats a rampaging monster, controlled by a fifth player. In my head, that (very uncharitably, I admit) sounded like it was going to be, well, Left 4 Dead-style shooting, only in the future, and one person on the other team controlling a scaled up Tank or Witch or whatever.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor promises plenty of strategising - and accidental chaos
Well, this is orc-ward.
Gragnor - I think I've remembered the name correctly - was afraid of beasts. Specifically, he was afraid of caragor, the thuggish cat beasts who roam the scrubland of Mordor, displaying surprising litheness when it comes to climbing walls, pouncing on foes, and ripping the throats of their victims open. Gragnor was a captain in the Uruk army, one of two personal bodyguards to the warchief I was ultimately gunning for. To make that final confrontation easier, my plan was pretty simple: brainwash the bodyguards and use them to undermine the warchief himself. Once he was weakened by their betrayal, I could kill the chief, replace him with one of my own guys - hey, maybe Gragnor? - and move on to my next job.

Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham blasts its heroes into space
All around the Watchtower.
Success has made the Lego games quietly lavish. Take the Batcave as an example. In the Dark Knight's latest adventure, it's a complex network of gantries and glittering rock, built around a column of falling water. Secrets beckon from every alcove, while studs jitter and jump from even the darkest corners of the screen. It's a reminder that, despite the headline IP, the Lego games have never really been about creativity. What they're about is busyness - and as the hardware improves and the production budgets increase, they've never looked busier than this.

The familiar fear of The Evil Within
Hands-on with Shinji Mikami's return to survival horror.
I'm trapped in a strange and sinister place, knee deep in gore and a vindictive supernatural force is toying with me for reasons I don't understand. It's strangely comforting. That's the curious contradiction at the bloodied and disembodied heart of The Evil Within, the new game from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, which publisher Bethesda Softworks has just announced will be released on 24th October in Europe, a couple of months later than previously expected.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter: a horror game after your mind
How unsettling can a non-combat first-person detective game be?
There are plenty of great horror stories in the world and there is no shortage of great detective fiction out there either, but for some the two go best hand in hand. For his studio's first release, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, former People Can Fly creative director Adrian Chmielarz is betting that they mesh particularly well in a video game, and that this combination captures the imagination more effectively than mere jump scares.
