Review | SimCity review
Urban decay.
From the air, Jefferson is glorious. It's a carefully sculpted city, the lines of which I scored into the landscape many hours ago and from which a relief has sprung more spectacular than anything I could have imagined. Downtown stands tall, great sentinels of concrete and steel that stare out over the huddled, homely neighbourhoods towards the edge of town. One by one, their lights wink out and, with the setting of the sun, workers become residents, making their way to redbrick apartments, two story townhouses, or the static homes sat amongst the trees at the city limits. A park fills with children, the air with their laughter, and those skyscrapers become sundials as afternoon shadows creep from block to block. But look a little closer and you find much that is wrong.

How Firaxis is building its Civilization: Beyond Earth
Escape from Alpha Centauri.
Everything went wrong when six Siege Worms suddenly appeared out of the ground. Think Dune's sandworms, only without their water allergy weakness, as comfortable in the grasslands of humanity's new home as its deserts, canyons and the less familiar fungal blooms. Attempts to keep very, very quiet or point to the nearest enemy city didn't go so well, as one giant's tendrils whipped every soldier in the area into human paste, before turning its attention inwards.

Opinion | Local multiplayer is gaming's holy grail
And, until recently, the industry had completely forgotten about it.
In the last year I had an epiphany. It turned out that my favourite genre of gaming is one I'd written off my entire adult life: the easy to pick up, but hard to master local multiplayer game. Gather round children and I shall tell you the tale of how we first met.

Video | Video: Child of Light in words and pretty pictures
Ubisoft's storybook RPG is quick to delight the eyes, but slow to engage the mind.
Ubisoft's charming fairytale RPG Child of Light is being made with the UbiArt Framework, used to create the last two Rayman games - and this 2D world is similarly stunning, if stylistically quite different. In place of Rayman's riotous cartoon antics, Child of Light is painted in delicate, dreamy watercolour, while in gameplay terms the development team has been quick to tip the hat to the classic Japanese RPGs of their youth.

Video | Video: Full Bore live stream
Check it snout.
Full Bore's a block-pushing puzzle game revolving around pigs, apparently. If that doesn't sell it to you, it has an "exploratory twist" and it also looks colourful and intricate and pleasantly quirky.

Video | Video: Outlast: Whistleblower live stream
Soul asylum
Outlast is a psychological horror game that's always looked sufficiently scary to stop me from playing it. Ian Higton's made of different stuff, however. He's worked his way through Outlast with a spring in his step and a jaunty song in his heart and now he's back for the newly released DLC called Whistleblower.

Earlier this month id parent company ZeniMax accused former id co-founder John Carmack of stealing VR tech before he left the company to work for Oculus VR full-time. Science friction with Outside Xbox.
Through systematic study, experiment and observation, scientists seek a greater understanding of the world for the betterment of mankind. Digital Foundry | Face-Off: God of War Collection on PlayStation Vita
Handheld with care?
The first two God of War games rank among the most spectacular titles on PS2 - major technical feats from the console's twilight years, both making a worthy jump to the HD era via Bluepoint Games' excellent PS3 remasters. The Vita, meanwhile, has a mixed history with PS2 ports so far, with Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 taking a visual hit owing to sub-native resolutions, and the Jak and Daxter trilogy running at truly trying levels of performance. So what's the deal with the God of War Collection on Vita?
