Feature | Bangai-O Spirits retrospective
Attitude for gains.
Bangai-O was once destined to be a generational cast-off. It was a quirky Dreamcast hit and an obscure N64 import around the same time, so it straddled two generations pretty easily. 2008's Bangai-O Spirits made sure Treasure's demented freeform puzzle-shooter would live through another. This was fabulous news when the game was announced, but even better news was that Bangai-O Spirits wasn't seeding its continuation by adding more content or updating the graphics. It did it by blowing its entire concept wide open, removing all traditional restrictions and shipping the game with a fabulous construction kit.

Feature | What the hell is that?
Is the PS4 launch line-up a victim of the shifting nature of video game spectacle?
If you're launching a console - like Sony is at the moment, right - one of the key phrases you're probably hoping to hear when people first set eyes on any of your new games is: What the hell is that? In fact, what the hell is that? (said with an admiring tone, mind) is worth tens of millions of pounds to platform holders and game designers alike. It gets people headed down the shops or clicking away on PayPal. It's the sound of audiences seeing something they have to have.

Powerstar Golf is another Xbox One launch title you may have missed
A quick look at Zoe Mode's day one download.
Big console launches are exciting enough, but they're often short on surprises - after months of build-up, hype and planning, when whichever big black box you've opted for arrives in your living room on day one there's never that much room in the launch line-up for unknown quantities. All of which makes some of the less hyped games like Zoo Tycoon all the more pleasing, as I discovered last week - and Powerstar Golf's another little surprise awaiting people who pick up an Xbox One at launch.

Review | SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow review
Shiny happy people.
In the future, we will all live in a daze, stunned by the technology that will surround us. Our homes will be at the top of towers thousands of feet tall, all of them connected by shining bridges that cut through the sky. Automated drones will keep us healthy, keep us tidy, even make sure we obey the law. We will work in buildings that are great sentinels of metal and light. We will be so rapt, so amazed by the omnipresence of progress, that we won't notice that the maglev train has got stuck, that the school bus is circling like a shark, that our friends can't find the shops next door. Then occasionally, just occasionally, something will knock us out of that daze and we'll realise just how silly the future has turned out.

Digital Foundry | Face-Off Preview: Need for Speed: Rivals on PS4 and Xbox One
Frostbite 3 hits the road on next-gen console.
Having convincingly toppled the Xbox One in terms of both resolution and performance, the PS4 release of Battlefield 4 stands as the first game to show a theoretical "on-paper" advantage manifest as a practical one. But today we turn from shooters to racers; coming from the newly-formed Ghost Games, Need for Speed: Rivals uses the very same Frostbite 3 engine to deliver a next-gen cops-versus-crooks chaser that blends single and multiplayer modes into one. However, given the series' strong history of platform parity - with PS3 and 360 releases of Most Wanted being almost like-for-like - do we dare to expect any clear performance leader with this new engine?

Something to finally oust Spelunky from your handheld?
Yes, yes, yes, the PlayStation 4's all super-exciting right now but let's not forget its portable sibling the Vita. It's been a bit quiet on the handheld front of late, though that's set to change with the release of Tearaway at the end of next week and, a couple of weeks later, roll7's OlliOlli.

Review | Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! review
Come on grab your friends. Or don't.
There are many words you could use to describe Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. Surreal. Inspired. Sweet. Ingenious. Sadly, those aren't words that apply to this video game spin-off. Repetitive. Shallow. Boring. These fit better.
