    Review | Gone Home review

A house is not a home.

Gone Home, an engaging but frustratingly slight narrative game from new Portland indie outfit The Fullbright Company, announces its intentions quite clearly with its title and its setup. It's 1995 and you play Katie, returning to Oregon after a long trip to Europe to find your family's new home empty and an enigmatic note taped to the door. Where is everyone? Exploring the large, unfamiliar house, you search for clues to where your parents and teenage sister Sam might be - and what might have happened to them in the past year that won't fit on the back of a postcard.

  22. Trigger Happy 2.0 review

Review | Trigger Happy 2.0 review

Steven Poole's latest book is a brilliant collection of his columns for Edge magazine.

'Trigger Happy' has always felt like a strange umbrella title for Steven Poole's games writing; he never seems to waste a bullet. Witness: his latest book kicks off by listing some of the cultural inroads games have made in the last decade or so. Slavoj Žižek has a Black Ops poster on his wall, Will Self and John Lanchester have written articles about games, and the V&A even included a few in a recent exhibition on British design. Specifics aside, it's an opener a dozen writers might have chosen, but only Poole would conclude this victory lap by kicking a little gravel into the stands. "And a surprising proportion of American teenage males say they want to be snipers when they grow up," he writes. "A dream that was surely nurtured by stealthy console-based ultraviolence."

  27. Ex-Monolith dev details its upcoming FPS Betrayer

Feature | Ex-Monolith dev details its upcoming FPS Betrayer

Available today on Steam Early Access.

Perhaps my favourite combat in any first-person shooter would be the tense cat-and-mouse skirmishes of Monolith's 2005 cult classic F.E.A.R. The cunning enemy AI, glorious slow motion and exaggerated particle effects that turned the most banal office into a warzone alongside my favourite video game shotgun ever combined to make this otherwise bog standard action game into a near classic. Now, a six-person studio headed by ex-Monolith devs is creating a new first-person shooter IP in Betrayer, which, for better or worse, sounds nothing like F.E.A.R.
