How Plants vs. Zombies 2 works as a free-to-play game so far
Fruit and wedge?
Plants vs. Zombies 2 launched last week on the Australian and New Zealand App Stores, and I've been playing it over the last few days. Since this is a soft launch, however, it feels safe to assume that EA is still doing the final balancing on this free-to-play game's monetised elements before the rest of the world gets to try it out. Rather than go straight to a review, then, we thought it would be best to provide a sense of where the game is at the moment, with a particular eye on how the new business model affects the overall design. The basic structure of this tower-defence sequel presumably isn't going to change that much in the weeks that follow, but the vital details of its economy and how that affects the flow of the missions just might.

Review | Civilization 5: Brave New World review
Cultural victory.
I have lost count of the cups of tea that have gone to waste at Firaxis' expense. The Civilization 5 developer is responsible for dozens left half-finished and forgotten, their heat dissipating as the decades roll by and Leonard Nimoy's honeyed tones note the founding of another milestone in human history or landmark feat of ingenuity. Scores more have gone cold as the music from that Hovis advert induces a Zen-like state and centuries run into hours and millennia stretch into days.

Codemasters raids history to revitalise its series.
It hasn't, by any standards, been a classic year for F1 so far. Sebastian Vettel's on course for a fourth consecutive title, and while the sport hasn't quite plumbed the depths witnessed during the last period of dominance by a German driver it's been at its weakest for some time, the racing only kept interesting as the playground politics seep onto the track in action that's blandly artificial. So it makes some sense, then, that the debut of this year's tie-in game shifts the focus away from the contemporary tedium of fast-degrading tire compounds to an era that's more famous for its full-blooded exploits. For the first time in Codemasters' tenure on F1, classic cars are making an appearance.

How well does cutting-edge PC code translate to next-gen console?
At E3 2012, Watch Dogs kickstarted the next generation of gaming long before the PS4 or Xbox One had even been announced, joining Star Wars 1313 as one of the defining moments of the show. A short gameplay walkthrough demonstrated a highly detailed world with a slew of impressive visual effects, animation and physics work that added an extra level of realism not possible on current-gen console platforms.

Digital Foundry | Cerny Computer Entertainment
Digital Foundry face to face with PS4 chief architect Mark Cerny.
The arrival of the next generation in console systems is hugely exciting for Digital Foundry. Sony and Microsoft are effectively pressing a giant button that resets everything we know about consoles and, for us, the race is on to find out exactly what's inside the new hardware, what it's truly capable of, how it compares with the current state-of-the-art in gaming technology, and how the platform holders have customised their designs to give their machines the edge over the competition.

Opinion | Apples and oranges
Why the new Apple controller designs don't point to a consoley future.
There's always been something compelling about the idea of Apple taking an active interest in video games. Steve Jobs used to talk about how Apple existed "at the intersection of technology and liberal arts", which would be an appealing philosophical position for any console manufacturer, and its insistence on controlling "the whole widget" - hardware, software, operating system, network - so it can guarantee a consistent user experience would also work nicely.
