APB Vendetta to be a PC and PS4 persistent online "extreme mobility" shooter, not scooter
That's if Reloaded's Kickstarter pitch for $300,000 works.
APB was an ambitious MMO built by Crackdown dev Realtime Worlds but it flopped, hard. The game died but was resurrected by Reloaded as a free-to-play MMO. We reviewed APB Reloaded last year and it wasn't very good.

Review | Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel review
Ready, steady, bro.
People sometimes ask me if it's hard to write about the really bad games. It isn't. Those are the easiest to write about, as their obvious flaws create a natural shape for the review and demand to be explored. No, the hardest games to review are games like Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel. Games about which there is almost literally nothing to say. This is gaming as a plain cheese sandwich; blockbuster action as supermarket muzak.

Review | Beastie Bay review
Creatures of habit.
Beastie Bay will remind you a lot of other Kairosoft games, like Game Dev Story. During its simplistic monster battles, it will almost certainly remind you of Pokémon. But it most reminded me of a maths teacher I had in primary school who would use strange examples to make the subject more interesting: instead of apples and coins, it was dinosaurs and doughnuts. All that silliness would distract us all from the fact that we were doing boring old sums, and Beastie Bay uses similar misdirection techniques, with moments of calculated weirdness - and the occasional dose of cute - to deflect attention away from its systems. Which, when it comes down to it, are often little more than busywork.

A woman, an old man and a bald man, tick tick tick.
Oh to be on the cusp of a new generation of console gaming. What are they capable of? How real will games look?! One trend has been demonstrating the possibilities by rendering realistic faces in real-time. First there was Quantic Dream's Old Man, then there was Nvidia's Bald Man.

Transistor preview: Supergiant's bold, futuristic follow-up to Bastion
The adventures of Red and the dead.
Supergiant's 2011 action-RPG Bastion made a lot of waves with its stunning art direction, procedural narration, and inventive approach to combat difficulty. It was clearly a game that wanted to rethink the isometric dungeon crawler rather than blindly follow in the footsteps of what came before. At a glance, its follow-up, Transistor, looks content to simply do Bastion again with its familiar isometric perspective, colourful world and the gritty vocal chords of rising voice-acting superstar Logan Cunningham dropping cryptic bits of narration over a mysterious plot that slowly comes into focus.

Review | Darkstalkers Resurrection review
Super street frightener.
How on earth do you follow-up a game like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo? From early 1991 to early 1994, Capcom released five iterations of the most important fighting game in arcade history. But instead of taking another ride on the cash cow rodeo, for the later half of 1994 Capcom decided to release two fighting games that were entirely devoid of Ryu and his street fighting buddies. One of these was X-Men: Children of the Atom, a game that laid the foundation for the Marvel vs. Capcom series, while the other was an entirely new proposition called Darkstalkers.

Review | Metal Gear Rising: VR Missions review
Knives out.
To begin with, Metal Gear's VR missions are little more than a lab-coated sort of field training. You're transported to some abstract, detail-less room and clinically led through the basics away from the noise and distraction of the game world. Each mission isolates a different aspect of the game (sneaking, sprinting, slicing and so on) and, through sparse instructions and with flickering sound effects, presents a challenge to lead you through apprenticeship towards mastery. By creating a safe place in which to fail and grading your performance, Metal Gear's VR missions act as a crucible in which to hone your technique and gain the necessary muscle memory for use in the 'real' game world, with its concrete and cardboard, its nooks and shadows.
