Digital Foundry | Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PC tech analysis - this port needed more time
Impressive tech, great scalability, but a host of issues to address.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is out now on PC, two years after it launched as a PS5 exclusive. It's always fascinating to see how Sony's flagship titles fare on PC, especially those produced by porting specialist Nixxes. Rift Apart is also a cutting-edge effort - it's one of the first to support DirectStorage GPU decompression, which ought to shrink load times and raise performance. This analysis reviews the quality of the PC port at launch (with some commentary on the new patch that just 'dropped') with derived PS5-equivalent and optimised settings for a range of hardware, plus DirectStorage 1.2 tests. There's plenty to praise from Insomniac's latest PC release - along with a litany of graphical bugs and issues that suggest the game needed a little more time in the oven.

Supporters | Game of the Week: the unsung heroism of Player 2
Tails of terror.
Tragedy strikes twice this month, as Christian Donlan is once again away from his desk and has left Eurogamer's Game of the Week column in my undeserving mitts (he's just on holiday, don't worry - I haven't locked him in a cupboard somewhere). I'm devoting this one to the act of being Player 2 in a two-player game, and why being Player 2 is kind of a game in itself.

Review | Remnant 2 - an eclectic but ever-rewarding third-person shooter
A league of its stone.
You won't get bored in Remnant 2: you're never with a world or enemy long enough to tire of it. By the time you think you're starting to get sick of the sinewy strata of Yaesha, you'll be thrown into a Labyrinth where the stone is sentient, and the cool portal pools belie the fact they may be about to catapult you to your death. And when you think you've had enough of those, you can explore the back alleys of Losomn, where gun-touting cockneys and werewolves - well, I think they're werewolves; the real life and otherworldly walk side by side here - stalk cobbled streets, faces half-hidden by the flickering torchlight. Later, you'll be chased across an alien sandscape by lumbering robots and petite UFOs, and visit a grey, ashen world where the only colour is the blood that's spilt - be it yours or theirs.

Feature | Tren, a game within a game, is a window into the spirit of Media Molecule
Choo choo choos your own adventure.
There's a lot of parenting in Tren. This is surprising in some ways, because Tren is ostensibly a virtual train set that comes with a suite of ingenious puzzles and race challenges attached to it. But pull back a little and it starts to make more sense. With Tren, John Beech, the game's design lead, and Media Molecule's newly minted creative director, asked himself if he could make a "triple-A" game inside Dreams, on his own, while simultaneously renovating a house and becoming a parent. The answer, in true Media Molecule style, is that he achieved all of that except for the "on his own" bit, but we'll get to that. For now, welcome to Tren. There's a lot of parenting in it.

Review | Disney Illusion Island - Mickey's first metroidvania, for better or worse
Duck tales.
Nobody is taking Donald away from me. I love his perpetual grumpiness and 'over it' attitude, combined with that wet and phlegmy unintelligible babble. In a game of childlike magical wonder and relentless positivity, Donald's is the squawking voice of reason - at least, with subtitles on.
