Review | Aliens: Dark Descent - more stand-up fight than bug hunt
Hive got a feeling.
The absolute worst thing in Aliens: Dark Descent isn't an alien, but the timeline in the top-right of the screen - or as I like to call it, Satan's Fast Forward Button. In this scrappy but compelling top-down tactics adaptation from Battlefleet Gothic: Armada developer Tindalos Interactive, you lead up to four Colonial Marines around labyrinths of corridors, flaming wreckage and sealed rooms, completing missions of the "activate the generator" variety while fending off - or preferably, avoiding - xenomorphs of all sizes and degrees of canonicity.

Digital Foundry | Innocn 48Q1V 48-inch OLED monitor review: surprisingly strong for PC use
Gaming performance, content creation and burn-in resistance tested.
The $1099 Innocn 48Q1V ticks a lot of boxes for me. It's a 4K OLED PC monitor with DisplayPort and HDMI 2.1 inputs, a matte finish and a refresh rate that tops out at 138Hz - oh, and it's gigantic at 48 inches. As a fan of OLED technology in the living room, I was eager to adopt one as a PC monitor - and find out if I could use it like a regular LCD without worrying about burn-in. One month in, I've got some preliminary results to share.

Feature | Can a strategy game be horrifying?
Command and quiver.
Here's a question for all you armchair General Pattons and Joan of Arcs: has a tactics or strategy game ever made you jump? I've been thinking about this a lot while playing Tindalos Interactive's promising movie adaptation Aliens: Dark Descent, out next week on console and PC, in which you guide a quartet of gung-ho yet fragile troopers around xeno-infested bases, tracking down survivors and trying not to wake the full wrath of the Hive.

Digital Foundry | AMD Radeon RX 7600 vs Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 vs Intel Arc A750: the 1080p graphics shoot-out
RTX 4060 is coming - and massive price-cuts are reshaping the entry level GPU market.
Nvidia's RTX 4060 is coming at the end of the month - and as a result, it seems that price-cutting in the entry level graphics card market is absolute carnage at the moment, to the point where we've even seen the potent RTX 3060 Ti available at sub-£300 prices. Meanwhile, the RTX 3060 - the world's most popular GPU, according to the Steam Hardware Survey - is now available for well under £300/$300, pricing on Intel's Arc A750 can deliver some preposterously good value, while last-gen AMD RDNA 2 cards are so cheap, it's causing problems for the new RDNA 3-powered RX 7600.

Feature | Jusant's jump is one of the greatest things in games for an absolute age
Bring on the wall!
I'd never normally start with a definition, but I gather "jusant" translates as "ebb", the movement of the tide out to sea. And this is where Jusant's Steam demo begins. What manner of post-apocalypse is this? It's a dry one. The water has gone, we walk over sun-baked earth whose smoothness suggests that it was once far below the ocean, and there's more to climb here because there's less liquid moving around to cover it all up.

Digital Foundry | Diablo 4 is a great PC port - except you need a 16GB graphics card to match PS5
Texture quality issues mar an otherwise excellent effort.
Diablo first hit PCs more than 25 years ago, and it has since become one of those rare franchises that just doesn't seem to get old. While there's a level of consistency across the various series entries, what really sets Diablo 4 apart is the fact that it was a multi-platform release on day one, and given how PC ports have fared lately, it would not be unreasonable to be wary of its quality. The happy news is that it's not difficult to run Diablo 4 across a range of PC hardware with excellent results - but there's a caveat to that: to achieve parity with PS5 in texture quality, a 16GB graphics card is required.

Review | Harmony: The Fall of Reverie - a narrative wonder with a view of the future
Either/oracle.
You can thank (or blame) Telltale Games for the mainstream rise of the choice-driven adventure game. That's not to say games like The Walking Dead brought some unseen revolution in video game storytelling. Story-driven games defined by user choice go back decades, the mechanics were present in many Western RPGs, and that's without starting a discussion on the history of visual novels. But it did cause a wider gaming population to embrace the idea, leading to a mainstream shift in storytelling to player agency that still continues to evolve today.

Supporters | Game of the Week: The quiet, restorative puzzles of Botany Manor
And a bit about Cucumber House.
One of my favourite paintings is Cucumber House, a watercolour - I think - by Eric Ravilious. It's an airy study in quiet. To me, it always feels like a day off school. We're inside some kind of greenhouse and various plants are growing. Glass slants overhead and there's a sense of careful order, of something lovingly tended, to the layout, the tables, the leaves and shoots. Cucumber House was painted in 1935, and I don't see the thirties as an enormously quiet decade. Ravilious himself would be killed in the war that was already starting to rumble. And yet: breathe in, breathe out. I really do love this painting.
