Feature | Quarto is a board game that makes zugzwang the star
Argh!
Quarto is so easy to learn that I was both introduced to it and taught the rules over the course of a single, brisk, Tiktok. It's a two-player board game that plays out on a 4x4 grid. Players take turns putting pieces on the grid. The objective is to get a line of four pieces, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, across the board.

Digital Foundry | DF Weekly: Hands-on with the Asus ROG Ally - is it really a Steam Deck killer?
Plus Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reaction and A Plague Tale: Requiem's 60fps mode tested.
It's a massive 105-minute DF Direct Weekly landing today, with myself, John and Alex discussing reactions to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, along with some follow-ups on John's coverage last week. We also discuss the fact that Sharp is providing a new display for an as-yet unannounced console (Switch 2?) while we also give a preview of sorts to A Plague Tale: Requiem's new 60fps performance mode. How did Asobo deliver this and to what extent is it really running at 60 frames per second? We'll have more on that later this week, but just remember - there's no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to real-time rendering and we're not just looking at rendering resolution reductions here. Regardless, 60fps was the key demand from many console gamers and it's great to see the developer respond.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom players can't guarantee Korok safety, from crucifixion to rotisserie
Ya-ha-byeee!
Koroks are back in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. As with its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, Link can search the lands of Hyrule to find these woodland spirits, and return the seeds to Hestu. As in Breath of the Wild, Hestu will then add these seeds to his prized maracas, do a little shimmy, and grant you a new weapon slot. It's all very wholesome.

Feature | Forget Ultrahand, Fuse, and Recall, the best skill in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is Ascend
Going up?
Like a lot of people I've spent the weekend poking through the early moments of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It's a dauntingly huge and complex game, filled with riches, so I've been taking it slowly, working my way between sky towers to unlock the map and stopping at any shrines I can find.

VR Corner | VR Skater on PSVR2 is shaping up to be the VR Tony Hawk's game you've always wanted
Watch Ian get wheelie sweaty with the preview build.
I've got so many fond memories of playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the PS1. Those heady, hazy days spent huddled around a small TV as me and my pals chatted nonsense and competed for high scores to the tunes of the game's punk rock soundtrack were so carefree and full of laughter.

Feature | After 25 years, Might and Magic 6 reminds us what it's like to have fun
"Wish we kept all the outtakes..."
1998 was arguably one of the best years for video games. Ocarina of Time, Half-life, and Resident Evil 2 all released in the space of twelve months - to name only a few. While we celebrate the 25th anniversaries of our most foundational games, however, one shouldn't be forgotten. Sometimes, it seems like anyone with a PC at the end of the 90s had a copy, and while not all of us will remember it fully, most will remember it fondly. Released on the 30th April 1998, Might and Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven is now 25 years old.

Digital Foundry | A stealth upgrade for Control on PC dramatically improves its visuals
A Remedy dev adds HDR, upgraded RT and DLSS features - and here's how they look.
Remedy's Control has always been a special game for Digital Foundry. Originally released in 2019, the PC version in particular wowed us with its slick destruction physics and groundbreaking ray tracing implementation. The studio has since moved onto new projects like Alan Wake 2, but remarkably one of the developers - Filippo Tarpini - has continued to refine the PC version of the game, adding an excellent implementation of HDR sorely missed in the original release (and the Ultimate Edition upgrade) along with a range of other improvements, including improved fidelity to the already excellent RT, improved texture streaming and a more fully featured DLSS implementation.
