Digital Foundry | Hardware Test: PS3 Slim
Smaller, cooler, cheaper, faster, better.
It's here, and I'm excited, and not just because I have a new piece of tech to dissect. When Sony redesigns its hardware, it tends to go the extra mile. It's not just about cutting costs, it's about making the whole device, and thus the brand, more attractive and "cooler". PSone and PS2 Slim delivered the goods, and who can forget the PSP-2000? Smaller, slimmer, obviously cheaper in terms of build quality but with more RAM and more functionality, like the very useful TV output. Can Sony deliver the goods with its new PlayStation 3?

Guitar Hero: Pop Edition.
Band Hero has long been lurking at the bottom of the Activision Blizzard release list in perplexing proximity to the more self-explanatory DJ Hero and Guitar Hero brands, but until last week I had absolutely no idea what it was. It doesn't take much power of deduction to conclude that it's another peripheral-based music game, but why? Surely that could only serve to dilute the Guitar Hero brand? I'm not sure how many more plastic instruments my flat can hold. I can count seven guitars without even exaggerating for comic effect.

Interview | Team Bondi - The First Interview
Brendan McNamara on how Team Bondi's top-secret PS3 project will be 'even more ambitious' than The Getaway - and won't take any less time to make...
Having just spent the past 10 days applying the Factor 20 and casually taking in the blissed out view of Chaweng beach through a pair of Spitfires, I can certainly relate to why Brendan McNamara and his Aussie cohorts would want to return to their Antipodean roots and remind themselves of the feel of Bondi beach sand between their toes.

Digital Foundry | Wolfenstein: End of the road for idTech 4?
Digital Foundry analyses Raven's latest.
There's a very real sense that Wolfenstein is something of an old-skool style of shooter, and this extends from the gameplay to the base tech: it's an enhanced version of the classic idTech 4 engine, which dates the core rendering code to 2005 and with it, the release of Doom 3. With that in mind, the game has a somewhat dated look and feel, particularly in the over-high use of glossy texture embellishments; even the character skintones are particularly "plastic". The tech here is older than the Xbox 360 itself.
