Digital Foundry | Far Cry 5's 60fps upgrade impresses on all current-gen consoles
A back-compat patch transforms the game on PS5 and Xbox Series hardware.
Far Cry 5 was a beautiful game when it launched back in 2018. The game portrayed a sprawling open-world set in the American countryside, with impressive foliage rendering, vast draw distances, and detailed texture work. It was a big step up from prior games, packing excellent support for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Five years on, Ubisoft has released an update that unlocks the full potential of the old code on current-gen consoles by unlocking the frame-rate and allowing the game to reach 60 frames per second - so is this a smooth experience? Or are gamers in for a bumpy ride?

Counter-Strike 2 is already a blast - and lays the groundwork for years to come
No smoke without fire.
I'm excited. I've been playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for 11 years now, since its release in 2012, and it's gone from being a LAN party curio to my go-to game I've sunk literally thousands of hours in, whether I'm testing hardware or testing my mettle in its online matchmaking. I'm joined online by 1.5 million concurrent players, and even when I take a break from playing, I follow the thrilling competitive scene that awards millions of dollars in prize money to its participants each year – not bad for a slow-paced, strategic shooter series that started life as a Half-Life mod in 1999.

Recommended | Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo review - spooky goings on in Tokyo
Curses!
Hark! What's that sound? A car backfiring? A gunshot? A train collision at a crossing gate? In Paranormasight, that crashing noise, brisk but richly layered, a bit of metal to it, is the sound of understanding. It fires up the moment a character makes a connection between two disparate parts of the plot. It's the proverbial dropping of a penny. It's the instance of the fingerpost. Aha! But also, since this is a doomy kind of fairy tale: oh dear.

Recommended | Terra Nil Review - an intricate ecosystem of puzzles
Reduce, reuse, recycle.
The first level of Terra Nil feels like perfection. What you give to the land and what you take from it renew each other, and so tasked with restoring a barren quarry to a thriving ecosystem, you start small. Far from the city builder convention of widely mapping out your infrastructure, you attend to small patches of land - one wind turbine and a handful of toxin scrubbers to clean the earth at a time, paid for by the irrigators you place to restore the grass on top of it.

Feature | Mile High Taxi is a swift ride through old visions of the future
Metered out.
I still remember the build up to American McGee's Scrapland. I would buy gaming magazines (well, when I was allowed to), particularly PC Zone, and the full-page ads made it seem like it was going to be a truly wondrous, open sci-fi adventure. There were also big expectations thanks to the success of McGee's previous game Alice. Despite the decent reviews, though, it didn't really have much of an impact at the time.

VR Corner | The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution isn't quite as shambolic on PSVR2
Painting the town dead.
I was an absolutely massive fan of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners when I played it on PC VR. Scavenging my way through the mini open worlds of post apocalyptic New Orleans was super immersive and the way that the virtual weapons had a feeling of heft and weight to them brought a great sense of realism to the proceedings.
