Review | WiiWare: Block Breaker Deluxe and Cocoto Fishing Master
Really? And, really?
Breakout? Really? Yes, that was my first impression as well, but then I thought, well, why not? The ol' bat-and-ball concept has endured because it's inherently fun - for whatever evolutionary reason, we humans like to bounce spherical objects off things, and if the things smash in the process then all the better.

Review | Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
Inspect a Luso.
The seminal 1998 strategy RPG, Final Fantasy Tactics, begins as all the very best war fairytales do, with a sad princess. She's kneeling on the stone slab floor of an ancient chapel pleading with God for deliverance from her enemies, who advance even as she whispers her grim supplications. The ensuing battle between her bodyguards and the would-be kidnappers is an orthodox but distinguished representation of the genre's chess-like mechanics. Sure, some of the characters are riding overgrown chickens but nonetheless it's an arresting, solemn set-up for a fantasy game whose mechanical complexities match the machinations of its rich and intricate plot.

Smash Bros. Battlefield, Aerosmith, Bourne.
For those of you who lost reception during the football yesterday, I sympathise. Unless you're a primary school teacher, obviously, in which case you probably want to call the police and get in touch with the parents and so on. But seriously, there's no segue here: I actually share your pain, although hopefully you didn't share my other pain: babysitting a two-year-old child and a two-month-old puppy as they try and out-piss and s*** one another for seven hours.

Review | Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Fantastic.
The other week we joked that if OutRun 2 was fan service, SEGA Superstars Tennis was dinner, dancing, cocktails and fellatio. We'd lose our jobs if we tried to put Super Smash Bros. Brawl on that scale. It's so completely, bonkersly in love with Nintendo that it's hard to imagine how it will be topped. Perhaps if the next Mario game prints money out of the disc slot every time you find a star. And Princess Peach turns out to be Scarlett Johansson, who lives in the box, and needs a backrub.

Interview | Spore
Through the eyes of right-hand lady, Lucy Bradshaw.
Spore is either accompanied by sweeping statements proclaiming its genius or by confused faces wondering what all the fuss is about. It's certainly ambitious. And early last week - Tuesday for those who like specifics - we were treated to the first stage of its launch: the Spore Creature Creator.

Review | Spore Creature Creator
Ironically, not evolutionary: revolutionary.
It's an unusual situation, to say the least. The Spore Creature Creator is one small part of the full game of Spore, due out on 5th September. Specifically, it's the bit - and smart, title-reading readers will spot this - about creating the creature. You stick bits together, in the manner of a 21st Century Mr. Potato Head, and watch it animate. There's no game. Of course, since one of Spore's main selling features is that your in-game universe will be populated with everyone else's creatures, they'll turn up in a game eventually, but right now there's nothing more than making a creature out of computer clay and marveling as Maxis' magic brings it to life. Maybe put it in front of a different background. Make it dance. Make it play with kids.

Review | Top Spin 3
Love at first service.
First they giveth, then they taketh away. Last time around, PAM slightly overcooked Top Spin 2's controls with layers of added complexity which appeared to add depth at the consequence of making it far less intuitive and playable than its deadly rival, Virtua Tennis. As good a game as it undoubtedly was, there was always the nagging sense in the back of your mind that you'd rather be playing SEGA's ageless offering.

Review | Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Stupid name, fantastic game.
Unlike Namco, Konami, Atari, Midway, and, more recently, SEGA, Capcom has seemingly resisted the cynical urge to lovelessly cash-in on its retro glories from decades past. With Street Fighter 2 the sole representative on Xbox Live Arcade, it seemed only a matter of time before the Japanese giant got around to digitally distributing more of its revered back catalogue.
