Digital Foundry | Wild Hearts: a potentially great game impacted by tech issues on all platforms
PS5, PC and Xbox Series versions tested.
Developed by Japanese studio Omega Force, Wild Hearts is an entirely new action RPG with more than just a passing resemblance to Capcom's Monster Hunter series. There's no disguising Wild Hearts' inspiration here: you accept missions, track down colossal beasts roaming the land and you battle through day and night, alone or in online co-op, until your target is slain. Beyond that, you scavenge their remains, mine the environment for resources and forge even higher-stat weapons and armour to take on even tougher foes. What sets this game apart is its target hardware: Wild Hearts targets current-gen consoles and PC only, whereas Monster Hunter is firmly addressing older gaming hardware. This gave me plenty of optimism going into reviewing the game - but it's clear that despite some laudible ambition here, every version of the game has technical issues in some form that must be addressed.

Digital Foundry | Company of Heroes: a brilliant PC game lacking in technical ambition
Plus: those all-important optimised settings.
If I had to sum up Company of Heroes 3 in a single sentence, I would say it is an excellent real-time strategy game that is technically sound - but also unambitious. I'm enjoying the game but I don't feel it's pushing boundaries in the way that its predecessors did. So, on the one hand, it does feel like a missed opportunity to a certain extent but the flip side is that it's very easy to run on very high settings across a range of hardware.

Game of the Week | The Tower is a game you'll be playing for a long time
Not without floors.
Hello! There are so many good games out this week, it's almost dizzying. Top of any list is a new game from Llamasoft - Akka Arrh is absolutely astonishing, a bright splinter of arcade genius that ranks with the studio's very best work. Elsewhere, Taps had a lovely war with Company of Heroes 3, while Shoot 'Em Up fans are well looked after both with Toaplan's latest collection of games and Will Freeman's luminous write-up of it. Finally, there's Birth, which feels a bit like discovering a whole run of underground comics written by someone who's about to be your new favourite writer.

Colt following.
Arkane Lyon, the creator of the Dishonored series and Deathloop, is a studio known for level design. Immersive sims run on the quality of their levels, of being playgrounds that offer you multiple routes and therefore gameplay choices about how to tackle them. They need to hold up to your curiosity and experimentation, while at the same time tell you a story without really seeming like they're telling you a story. Frankly, it's an art, and there aren't many better at it than Arkane.
