    The Club

    The alternative post-pub ecstasy.

It's pretty pathetic seeing the best and brightest UK games journalists after they've just played The Club. These are the people that play games for a living. They shouldn't have any trouble with a shooter that's been stripped to the bare bones of running and gunning, especially not one with levels the length of a pop song. But it was like being in an old people's home after a daily ten minute session of callisthenics. Word for word, here are a couple of things I overheard:

    Review | Battlestar Galactica

    Are you alive?

I'm not sure whether he was feigning surprise or what, but Dan was rather upset when he found out Wing Commander Arena was rubbish. Xbox Live Arcade may have lots of shoot-'em-ups, but it was short of the sort of thing WCA offered: quick-fire online dogfights in famous spaceships. Battlestar Galactica seems to be going after the same niche, and cocks it up just as spectacularly.

    Review | Carnival Games

Some of the fun of the fair.

Forrest Gump was wrong. Life is not like a box of chocolates, it's like a collection of mini-games. Some bits are dull and frustrating (traffic jams, trips to Ikea, Wii Sports baseball). Some bits are fun and exciting (rollercoasters, Wii Play air hockey, how's your father). All bits are best enjoyed with at least one other person.

We're not sure how deliberate the choice of venue for our second look at Ascaron's forthcoming action RPG, Sacred 2, has been - but we're quietly impressed nonetheless. We're in a bar just off Oxford Street called Jerusalem; a city most notable for being, well, sacred, to three of the world's biggest religions. Nice touch.

    We express an opinion.

For the past twenty years answering the question "What game would you recommend to someone desperate to drive a steam train on the old Somerset & Dorset railway has been dead easy. Evening Star by Hewson Consultants. Now, thanks to the arrival of Rail Simulator, confusion reigns. What's urgently needed is one of those old-fashioned head-to-head comparison reviews. A few years ago I came this close to joining the army. I'd passed the medical and the psychometric test and was minutes away from signing on the dotted line when the subject of uniforms came up. I happened to mention that the Mk6 helmet really didn't suit me and that I was planning to wear a camo-pattern Trilby, or one of those Prussian jobs with the spike on top, instead. When the aghast sergeant pointed out that bespoke millinery was strictly forbidden I realised I'd picked the wrong career.

    Review | Dynasty Warriors: Gundam

    Must play.

The Japanese launch of Gundam Musou inspired a surge of interest in the PlayStation 3, with the 170,000-odd copies of the game that shifted in its first week on sale helping to double sales of Sony's console. That's because the game marks a conjunction between the massively popular Gundam anime series and the massively popular Musou videogame series. When the time eventually comes for the game to come out over here, it will no doubt inspire only a ripple of indifference - a mark of the stubborn apathy with which western audiences view both Gundam and the Musou series (better known as the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors series in the west). It's their loss: Gundam Musou - Dynasty Warriors: Gundam to you and I - is absolutely brilliant.
