Review | Viva Piñata: Party Animals

    Party's over.

There's footage of me (in one of those Eurogamer TV Shows Johnny makes when he's not hob-knobbing with Jo Wiley) positively agape with delight at the sight of all my old Viva Piñata friends dancing merrily across Microsoft's E3 mega-screen. This is because I love Viva Piñata. I cuddle it when I go to bed. It was one of the best games of 2006 and I have many happy memories of playing it on cold winter evenings, the warming sights and sounds of a flourishing garden coaxing me further into the night. What the camera failed to capture, however, was what happened next. As the true nature of Party Animals became apparent, my jaw undropped itself and clenched, the smile disappearing from my face in a cascade of furrows and despairing creases. Mini-games. Why not just piss on my face?

Feature | Wii: 12 Games of Christmas

My true love gave to Wii.

The nights are so long these days (sorry, nights) that you could dress them up in angry forum posts and call them the delay between major Wii releases. Of the 12 Games of Christmas features we've done so far, this line-up saw by far the most chins stroked and calls placed in search of suitable candidates.

    Review | Gears of War

    Fenix the fight!

Billed by its creator as a game that would "place gamers directly in the shadows of a ravaged world, surrounded by the beautiful remnants of a destroyed city and the horrific dangers that hide in the rubble", Gears of War is designed to be a crowd-pleasing blockbuster. From the chainsaw bayonet to the exploding crossbow bolts, from the giant spider clawing at your helicopter to the elusive, sibilant stirrings of cloaked monsters buried deep below the earth in an ocean of golden death. It's an almost ceaseless chain of brutal skirmishes and firefights fought by tank-like muscle men who eat gravel for breakfast and sound as though they chew on wasps when they polish their armour, which isn't very often, because they're too busy washing their hands in blood. But despite its ludicrous, comical violence, its likeably primitive caveman cast and its brilliant graphics, the reasons it works are almost entirely distinct from the qualities of the action films to which its impact is often compared.

    Review | F.E.A.R. Extraction Point

    Don't be afraid.

What an interesting idea! Remember where F.E.A.R. left off? With the First Encounter Assault Recon team flying away from the mushroom cloud that buried the corpse of Paxton Fettel, apparently about to be thrown back into the rubble as Alma crawled threateningly into the cabin? Well it turns out it was all a misunderstanding. She just wanted to come round for tea. So after going home and having a warm bath, everyone turns up again refreshed and sets out on a new mission, laughing and dancing with Alma, off to investigate another paranormal siege under different conditions, exploring other areas of the horror story spectrum in the process.

    Play these with mince wine.

It is now dark when we walk home and birds are either dropping out of trees in frozen lumps or going somewhere much nicer for their holidays. Review | Eye of Judgement

    Looking good.

A year and a half has gone by since Eye of Judgment was first unveiled. The game made its debut at E3 2006, which did for Sony what It's a Royal Knockout did for Prince Edward. EoJ got a bit lost while everything else was going on. Mixed in with all the giant enemy crabs, drunken aircraft and grazing rhinos flying about the place, the sight of Phil Harrison faffing about with a pack of cards and a camera just seemed like another bizarre piece in a rubbish puzzle.
