    Review | Geon: Emotions

    Time of the month?

Somebody has been working hard to make Geon: Emotions sound more enigmatic than it really is. Not content with letting the game's specifics hide within the vagaries of the abstract futuristic sports genre, the developer/ publisher/ PR agency has sought to further befuddle consumers with talk of gameplay based around 'playing to emotional strengths', 'using feelings to your advantage' and other such imprecise spin.

    Review | Virtual Console Roundup

Sin and Punishment, Gradius 3 and Legend of Hero Tonma.

So, bye bye then, Hanabi Festival. You were a curious little experiment, not exactly brimming with festival atmosphere, though your bountiful gifts of cool Japanese games unseen on our shores were most welcome all the same. It's just a shame you had to sour the excitement slightly by bumping up the prices for no apparent reason. Regardless, the general idea is certainly one that should be encouraged and hopefully we'll see Nintendo refining it further in the years to come.

    Review | FIFA 08

    0-0. Extra time being played.

Let's rewind twelve months. ‘Watch your back, Konami' was the ominous warning that rounded off our review of FIFA 07, a statement fuelled by a belief that after years of churning out identikit pap, EA had finally taken the hint that tacking on a novelty feature onto the previous year's game and slapping it onto the shelves was no longer a recipe for global domination. Having had its nose blooded by the mesmerising Pro Evolution Soccer series, FIFA 07 was an attempt to bite back. But it wasn't quite enough. Now, FIFA has returned, refocused, leaner, hungrier and eager to retake the crown that PES swiped off its cocky head a few seasons ago.

Review | Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars

    Time takes its toll.

Some things age well: fine wines, antique furniture, Michaela Strachan. Others don't: breast implants, Yop, corpses. Crazy Taxi, sorry to report, belongs in the latter category.

    This week in games

    A handy digest.

This week will always belong to Halo 3, which launched in the US and Europe to astonishing success - probably because MacGyver was on board. The game predictably broke sales records, and was celebrated by Microsoft giving away freebies to Live Gold members, shadowed by the emergence of a new live action short from director on the payroll Neill Blomkamp.

What's the most surprising thing about the first PS3 instalment in the Ratchet & Clank series? It's not the return to the classic platforming-shooting-collecting gameplay of the first three games. It's not, whatever the hype might say, because it's exactly like playing a Pixar film. Because it isn't, as even Insomniac will admit. It's this: Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction makes use of the Sixaxis controller's motion-sensing capabilities in a way that isn't completely rubbish.

    Feature | What's New? (21st Sept, 2007)

Oh hai I upgraded ur banazaz!

Waking last Saturday morning at about 10, I saw I had two missed calls from home. This wasn't enough to stop me falling asleep again. (In my defence, it was the first lie-in I'd had in my new flat - and you're not my real Dad.)

    Review | LocoRoco Cocoreccho

    Interactive screensaver my foot.

LocoRoco Cocoreccho might just be the boldest PlayStation Network release yet. We all expected Sony to replace the shoulder button tilting of the PSP version with Sixaxis motion sensors and then sit back and count the money. Instead we've got an entirely different game made out of the same parts - not just a decent sequel, and certainly not an "interactive screensaver", but what's actually a better game all round.

    Review | Piyotama

    Much l'oeuf.

When John Walker said Slitherlink was completely brilliant, he identified one of its advantages over Sudoku as the ability to complete complex puzzles without having to juggle all sorts of values and variables in your head. But that's not to say the opposite can't be rewarding, as Piyotama - a cute little puzzle game released on the US PlayStation Store at the start of August - happily proves.

    Review | SEGA Rally

    Return of the arcade.

Arcade gaming: it's an evocative term loaded with promise and suggestion, yet one that's long since lost its cutting edge relevance and magnetism since its heyday. All too often it's lazily bandied around to sell new console games by people who seem to have forgotten what it actually means. SEGA hasn't.

Review | Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts

Because the other two fronts got along so well.

The British - tea-drinking, moustache-twirling nancy-boys. Usually dastardly, or at the very least conniving. This much, Hollywood and games have taught us. Clearly, uber-RTS developers Relic have spent some time hanging out at branches of Wetherspoons, as they've managed to paint a rather more accurate portrait of the denizens of our sceptered isle, whose forces make up one of the two new factions in this World War II RTS 'expandalone'. Apparently, we're incredibly foul-mouthed, angry and violent. Sounds about right, really. Though I did hear at least one cutscene mention putting the kettle on.
