Feature | What's New? (14th Sept, 2007)
New PAL releases.
My bosses will no doubt argue that the ability to compose What's New on a train stranded at Watford Junction on the way back to Brighton that doesn't even go to Brighton and will involve switching at Gatwick and probably getting home at 10.30pm is a fantastic thing and a cause for celebration. I am putting that in italics in the hope that they will glance only at it and not this bit about how I disagree and it's rubbish and I wish I was safe at home tucked up in wine.

Glance over the videos of Metal Gear Solid 4 - and there have been plenty, including the hilarious new Tokyo Game Show addition - and you might be given the impression that it's a complicated game full of fiddly little controls. That's certainly how it looks when Kojima acts it out. Fortunately, it's not how it plays. In fact, judging by the playable demo here in Makuhari, it's gone from being slightly awkward to deceptively but welcomely simple. And let us not forget that it has a monkey in it.

The world's gone mad.
In Echochrome, Sony's wacky new puzzle game for PlayStation Network and PSP, things are not as they seem. Or rather, they are as they seem, but only until you change the camera angle. Horses are rubbish. We would much rather have an Abram tank. Biplanes are pony, too - one of those whirly-choppers with a mounted gun is much more agreeable. And why use a bow and arrow when an automatic rifle with digital bits and bobs is available?

Review | MySims
MyMy.
I think the most befuddling thing about Animal Crossing was how incredibly simple it seemed. Watching people trying to describe it in reviews was always amusing; it's nearly impossible to explain how a game in which all there is to actually do is fish and run errands could possibly be anything other than boring and pointless, and even harder to pinpoint that something that makes it so much more than the sum of its parts. After all, it's a game in which you do nothing much for a few hours a day, over the course of months and years. It makes absolutely no sense.

It's hardly surprising to hear Project Gotham Racing referred to during a demo of The Club. After all, both are Bizarre Creations games. What's more surprising is to hear mention of Tekken, Street Fighter and Tony Hawk. There are references to other shooters, but not in the context you might expect. At one point we're told, "The Club isn't about hiding behind cover and waiting for guys to come to you. It's not about stealth. It's sort of... Anti-Gears of War."
