Review | Madden NFL 08
Far from the Madden in-crowd.
A violent trivia: each sack a quarterback endures lessens his life expectancy by two days. Two days! A legitimate week's end, as it were. Forty-eight hours the chap could've spend picnicking, dating female leaders-of-cheer, inking an uninteresting memoir, or playing video game football, presumably. Sport is a sacrificial job, but for all their million-salaried selves, what's braver than gambling moments of your life over a few yards of turf?

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
Together at last.
For millennia, the Olympic Games have brought nations together in a celebration of sporting prowess and global harmony. Apart from that year the Nazis did it and the ones in the eighties with the Cold War boycotts. Now they are bringing the world's most famous videogame characters together in a glorious celebration of shaking small white objects really hard.

Review | God of War II
One for the unbelievers.
How do you top one of the best games ever made? Do you churn out more of the same as quickly as possible and cash in while the demand's there, or do you go through a drawn-out process of reinvention that keeps the series fresh? As a selfish, selfish sonofabitch gamer, you always want a bit of both. Always. You want a quickfire sequel to sate your appetite, but you certainly don't want the creativity to evaporate as sweatshop development cycles turn the 'brand' into a depressingly formulaic cash cow. (Hello, Tomb Raider Chronicles.)

Review | Virtual Console Roundup
Bonk 3 and Vegas Stakes.
Um, yeah. Sorry. Not the most dynamic intro. I usually try to start off these articles with a bit more energy, usually pumped up with some fine wines and sexy dancing (you don't see this part, but I like to think it comes across in the writing) but it's just that, well, this week...it's all a bit bleh. Only two new games, neither of which will send you scurrying to the Wii Store. So, hmm. Yeah. Here they are.

Review | Streets of Rage 2 review
Did brawlers get any better?
As predicted, jolly old SEGA's onward march into the retro kingdom of the Xbox Live Arcade continues apace, with Streets of Rage 2 representing its fourth Mega Drive/Genesis re-release on the download service since mid July. Having already spewed 31 titles onto the Wii's Virtual Console service in little over nine months, it seems pretty likely that we'll see a lot more over the coming weeks and months. Having said that, Microsoft appears to be cherry picking the best/most famous of the bunch, so perhaps we'll be spared a complete re-run of SEGA's entire 16-bit back catalogue. How about some of your arcade games, eh SEGA?

Review | Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms
Coming to America. And Lithuania.
If someone walked up to you in the pub and offered you control of a country for a fiver, you'd probably have some questions you'd want to ask. Like - say - what's wrong with it? "Oh, nothing. Nothing at all," he'll explain. "I mean, there may be a bit of a war on but..."

Another gem? Or plumbing new depths?
Whether you're one of those people who sneer at orcs and goblins, and scoff at bearded men who roll dice, or whether you're actually one of those bearded men (or, indeed, women), it's impossible to deny the far-reaching influence of Dungeons and Dragons. Without Dungeons and Dragons we'd still be stuck playing Space Invaders. We wouldn't be playing Zelda, or Final Fantasy, or Dragon Quest, or maybe even Deus Ex. We may not even have been introduced to Doom. And we certainly wouldn't have been able to play any of the magnificent officially licensed D&D videogames, from SSI's gold box series all the way up to Bioware's richly detailed narrative epics. And now, hopefully, up to Dungeons and Dragons Tactics, a turn-based strategy title for the PSP, created by Kuju Entertainment.

Review | Global Conflicts: Palestine
If it bleeds, it leads.
You can keep your demon-lords, your sinister schoolgirls, and your tentacled Cthulhoid abominations. None of them are half as chilling as a 15-year-old Palestinian lad with an unhealthy interest in martyr cards ("They are like your Pokemon trading cards"), Paradise, and Israeli café culture.

Review | Heavenly Sword
Sevenly flawed.
The most disappointing games aren't the low-scoring Driver 3 out of 10s - those are just the road crashes we point and laugh at. Those are beyond redemption. No, the really gutting ones are always the ones that just fall short of greatness, where you feel sure that with a bit more polish and refinement that they could (and perhaps should) have been amazing. Heavenly Sword is that sort of game: your sense of disappointment is amplified because it's clear that Ninja Theory handled so many elements exquisitely. It really did have the potential to be the PS3's first must-have title - yet, somewhere along the line it doesn't quite deliver. For PS3 owners, the wait for the killer-app goes on.
