Digital Foundry | Drop + Hifiman HE-R7DX review: these $99 headphones are worth buying
Impressive closed-back headphones for the money.
The pitch for Drop and Hifiman's HE-R7DX headphones is pretty simple: bring the essence of audiophile-grade audio down to an affordable level. At $99, these cans ought to be a solid starter for budding audio enthusiasts, promising great audio even if you're driving them from a standard phone or computer rather than a powerful DAC. In fact, Drop's page promises "excellent isolation, impressive details" and even "open-back-level soundstaging". It sounds like a winning formula, but do the HE-R7DX live up to their billing? We tested the HE-R7DX for two weeks to find out.

Digital Foundry | Xbox Series S vs ray tracing: the story so far
Support is thin on the ground - but there is promise for the future.
The Xbox Series S is, on paper, every bit as feature-rich as the Series X. It's based on the same fundamental RAM, storage, CPU, and GPU technologies - which of course means that it is ray tracing capable. You can absolutely get RT acceleration on the system, just like any other RDNA 2-based hardware platform. In practice, it's a bit more complicated. The Series S has a modest 4TF GPU paired with a meagre 10GB of RAM, which makes it challenging to implement complex ray-tracing effects on the console. Most recent games lack ray-tracing on Series S, even if they pack one or more effects on Series X and PS5.

Review | Dead Space remake review - a horror original re-engineered as a franchise prequel
Ishimura the merrier.
The not-so-good ship ISG Ishimura is around 62 years old by the time Isaac Clarke arrives there in Dead Space. During its long career as a "planet cracker", this unpleasant hybrid of Nostromo and whaling vessel has been modded and expanded in grander and smaller ways. Even playing a newcomer - part of a small team sent to repair the Ishimura following a loss of comms - you feel that history of alterations as you stomp from sector to sector, fixing up broken systems while demolishing the, as it transpires, horribly mutated undead remnants of the crew.

Review | Season: A Letter to the Future review - a thoughtful premise with some minor snags
Under the weather.
Do you keep a journal? I used to. Initially, I tipped all my kid-shaped thoughts into a book with citrus-scented pages, and then my teenage dreams and devastations fell into a navy diary with golden trim and a flimsy lock. Several years later, I moved on to blogging and learned, very much the hard way, not to blast every waking thought and irritation onto the internet.
