Calling occupants of interplanetary craft.
It's easy to get jaded as a games journalist. If you think you play a lot of games, think how many games the average reviewer gets through. And think about what it's like to have to play games to deadline, worrying how you're going to come up with another devastatingly clever and unique piece of insight that will distinguish your review from all the others out there. Think about getting so many free games that if a game doesn't amaze or astonish within about ten seconds it's on to the discard pile, never to be played again (or, if you're less scrupulous, on to eBay for a quick buck). Imagine playing so many games that you can only see Gears of War as yet another underwhelmingly brown/grey gruff-voiced third-person shooter, or Shadow of the Colossus as just a boring sequence of tediously lengthy boss battles.

Xbox Live Video Marketplace dissected.
Launched on November 22, Microsoft's Live Video Marketplace is the first major video on demand system to be implemented on a mainstream games platform. It's ambitious in every way - from the amount of material on offer and the range of deals Microsoft has secured, to the quality of the video playback itself. It's the sort of thing we expected to Sony to launch with PS3, or else for Apple to champion more adeptly via its iTunes delivery system. Somewhat against the run of play so far, Microsoft has got there first with a video on demand system that cuts into HD-DVD and Blu-ray's HD territory, offers legal TV show downloads, and even undercuts Blockbuster on the price of a movie rental.

Review | Call of Duty 3
One missed call.
Unless you've spent the last week or so in a coma after being brained by a flying Wiimote, you're probably aware by now of just how successful the launch of Nintendo's latest has been - but a trawl of gamer opinion would reveal that among the hardcore, at least, there's still some skepticism over the long-term prospects for the console. That's not really based on any level of mistrust for Nintendo's ability to keep delivering great experiences for the Wii - the DS' track record banishes any lingering doubt in that regard - but rather on a well-founded concern over how third party publishers will cope with things like the new control scheme and the vast imbalance in power between this and other next-gen systems.

Review | NBA 2K7
Rocking the rim.
Why are yearly updates a good idea? Because content just swells on those discs. A game like NBA 2K7 couldn't be where it is today - at the top of the heap - without years of tweaks, refinements, tinkering, mistakes, polish and hard graft. It's difficult to know where to start with NBA 2K7 because there's so much of it. Seasons, tournaments, single games, franchise mode and a fat online offering easily make it the most comprehensive basketball title on next-gen, laughing off any semi-pro challenge that comes from EA's NBA Live effort. 2K Games' b-ball title is the shit.

A wiimote chance of this matching Project 8.
The potential of the Wiimote, as I will forever insist on calling it, is enormous, and for many excited developer puppies it will be overwhelming. While the new Monkey Ball wasted some opportunities with the crappy party games, the natural and instinctive use of a motion sensitive controller for the regular levels feels like this is how the series was always designed to be played. A skateboarding sim, however, does not.

Review | Ford Street Racing: LA Duel
Escort service.
In making the leap from joypad to handheld, the perennially unremarkable Ford Racing series finally has something to crow about - it's one of the few games to actually expand during the transition, rather than being crudely chopped down to size. That's not to say that the flaws apparent in the most recent console edition (which I also had the honour of reviewing) aren't still present and incorrect but, for what it's worth, if you were ever tempted to give the series a spin, this would probably be the best version to try.
