Review | Killzone: Liberation
It's not what you're thinking.
It's tempting to write a big long introduction about how decidedly average the first Killzone game was here, but that wouldn't be very fair. One article in an official magazine came out calling it a Halo-killer and suddenly everybody in the world was expecting it to be the PlayStation 2's Second Coming and no wonder it was such a let-down when the poor fanboys actually got to play it rather than lying about how amazing it was on forums. Admittedly it was disappointing, but it wouldn't have appeared nearly as disappointing had it not been smothered in such completely unfounded hype, and now it's come to be something of a poster-game for Sony cynics . Poor Killzone. It wasn't its fault.

Review | Formula One '06
The same winning formula.
There are always things you can rely on in life. Michael Schumacher on the winner's podium, and an annual Formula One game from Sony. But although interest in F1 videogames continues to tumble from their peak ten years ago (when, incredibly, Psygnosis' F1 game was the biggest all format seller in the UK in the entire year), the quality of these often overlooked games remains as high as ever.

Review | GUN: Showdown
Not so quick on the draw.
Yep, we're home on the range again, back in the big country, checking out all the pretty horses, and hellbent on restoring law and order to Dodge City in old California (sort of), thanks to Activision's decision to enlist the help of a hired hand to convert last year's western, GUN, for Sony's little big man, the PSP. British developer, Rebellion (not a bad company) has shown true grit in porting the title, with some technically impressive results, but unfortunately while the game's got a fair bit of good, it's also got it's share of the bad and the ugly too. How's this concept intro working out for you by the way? I'll level with you: it's not going as well as I intended. Am I (un)forgiven?

Review | Crash Boom Bang!
Think Mario Party but less fun.
Being a games journalist, I spend much of my time on my own with only a PC and my numerous games consoles for company. It's sometimes a lonely life but I love it and really wouldn't have it any other way. My flat might be tiny and cluttered, stuffed to the gills with consoles, code and DVDs but it's home and, unlike many journalists, I thrive on the isolation.

In the Hammersmith Apollo - tickets still available!
There has been a conspiracy today to remind me about the Video Games Live concert; first a press release trumpeting the involvement of Richard Jacques in the event, and then a near-miss when I almost managed to empty my ticket for the event into the bin during a much-needed purge of about seven hundred supermarket receipts and Nectar point statements from my wallet.

Review | Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
You've got red on you.
Wow. They actually did it. They actually found a way to make MK Armageddon even less necessary. While the new game might have vast rosters of characters, the simplicity of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and its wealth of classic finishing moves make it the far better game and for far less cash. We don't want dodgy third-person adventure modes, half-baked creation modes or reams of unlockable artwork. We just want to beat gallons of blood out of silly-looking characters then make them explode in a shower of bones and offal. Is that such a bad thing, really? Perhaps it is, but as far as guilty pleasures go, UMK3 is right up there.

Review | Pilot Academy
Let's not become a pilot!
Pilot Academy is a game about flying planes. It's got civilian planes, military planes, new planes, and old planes; it's got missions, challenges and lessons; and it's got records and achievements and multiplayer modes. It's an extension of the Japanese flight sim series, Pilot Ni Narou (or Let's Become A Pilot!), which has been brought out over here by Rising Star Games, a publisher with the admirable mission of releasing lesser known or niche Japanese titles in the west. But on balance, they probably shouldn't have bothered with Pilot Ni Narou.
