For Japanese loyalty schemers.
Club Nintendo, the Japanese version of our rubbish Stars Catalogue (you know, the scheme that lets us spend our loyalty points on desktop wallpapers and occasionally, if we're lucky, whatever they have lying around in the basement), has been updated again and the treats are almost enough to make us cry.

Feature | Xbox 360 BC: The Best Ones
Some old Xbox classics you should try out on the 360.
Enough ranting to embattled Zenmeister Peter Moore about the Xbox games that don't work on our 360s. What about the ones that do? It's not as though Microsoft's "emulation ninjas" haven't already managed to get a whole bundle of them working, and with that in mind we've cheered up a bit since yesterday and started working through the "compatible" list and had some fun sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Review | Rush for Berlin
German capital hosts 1945 World Cup final.
If you ever want to learn the meaning of the old adage 'Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind' read a good history of the Third Reich. In 1945, the tide of evil that Hitler had unleashed on the Soviet Union in '41 rolled back into the Fatherland like a karmic tsunami. The unstoppable Red Army, taught to look upon Germany as the lair of the beast, stormed through neat and prosperous Prussia, Pomerania and Silesia, destroying, looting and raping as it went. Insane orders from Berlin forced tens of thousands of Axis soldiers and Volkssturm (a civil defence force of old men and boys) to stand in its path and perish. The horror and the suffering was unimaginable...

Review | Rise & Fall: Civilizations At War
Stained.
While Playing Rise and Fall I find myself thinking about the poetry of Shelley, and not just because I'm an irremediable ponce. You see, this is Empire-Earth creators Stainless Steel Games swansong, having closed down before its release. Well before. Several months before its release, meaning it's only a swansong because someone's holding the bird's neck up, moving its jaw up and down and doing a little ventriloquism. Whatever state the game was in when Stainless Steel went down, it was passed over to Midway itself who finished it off.

Yet more Oblivion content.
The Mehrunes' Razor dungeon Bethesda trailed a fortnight ago for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has been released on PC and Xbox 360. It's $2.99 for the PC version, which requires a recent patch to work, and apparently costs 250 Microsoft points if you want to play through it on Xbox 360 - although I can't test that right now because my 360 keeps freezing up in disgust this morning.

Review | Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge
Deadwood, or fresh growth?
Videogame westerns... hey, look at that tumbleweed. The few that do come trotting out of the creative desert really don't do much to break the drought. Recently we suffered Gun, which was a peculiar misfire of ideas that failed to inspire and ended up being slung out of the saloon doors by a disgruntled Eurogamer posse. It's easy to see why that particular mixture of ambitions was frustrated, but Desperados 2 could have been, should have been, more straightforward.
