Digital Foundry | DF Direct Weekly: is next-gen GPU pricing out of control?
Looking more closely at the RTX 4070 Ti backlash.
Welcome to 2023 and the return of DF Direct Weekly! After a short time away - we missed a week, actually - the team returns to discuss the latest gaming and technology news. The year kicked off with the Consumer Electronics Show - CES - and in this week's show, myself, John Linneman and Alex Battaglia discuss the keynotes from Nvidia, AMD and Sony, including our first look at Gran Turismo 7 on PSVR2, while addressing the latest concerns about thermal throttling on the RX 7900 XTX reference board as well as new innovations coming this year for OLED TVs.

Digital Foundry | AMD Ryzen 5 7600 review: at what cost?
A new cheaper entry-point to the Ryzen 7000 family.
A few days ago, AMD announced a trio of cheaper Ryzen 7000 CPUs at its CES 2023 showcase, featuring more modest 65W TDPs, bundled air coolers and a release date of January 10th. One of these CPUs, the $230/£230 Ryzen 5 7600, has made it to DF HQ where we've put it through our full test suite of the most processor-intensive games. Is this a cheaper entry point to the Ryzen 7000 family with effectively zero compromises, a la the Ryzen 5 5600, or are there still some reasons that you'd consider the more expensive Ryzen 5 7600X?

Digital Foundry | Mortal Shell on Nintendo Switch: an ambitious port with big performance problems
Shellshock.
With a surprise late 2022 release on the Nintendo Switch eShop, Mortal Shell: Complete Edition gives Switch users the full package; a complete port of the 2020 Souls-like, with all DLC and content updates included. At first glance Mortal Shell on Switch actually looks like a success. In much the same vein as other Unreal 4 titles like Mortal Kombat 11, the visual make-up - the core details of the action - translate well to Switch, but having spent the last week this portable release I've got to say there are glaring issues. Specifically, hitting such an ambitious bar of quality comes at a cost to its frame-rate and so it follows, also its playability. The impact is so striking that at times, the Switch version is a genuine struggle to control.

Feature | How A Plague Tale came back from the brink
"The game was a mess..."
Sometimes it's hard to imagine, when a game becomes a series and an admired one at that, that once upon a time there was nothing. There was nothing tangible. All there were, were hopes and ideas, swirling around. And the process of materialising them into something: it's a fragile thing. There's no certainty that what will come out the other end will even survive that process. And A Plague Tale: Innocence, it turns out, very nearly didn't.

Digital Foundry | Fortnite on Unreal Engine 5: can Steam Deck handle Epic's next-gen tech?
Ray-traced Lumen and Nanite geometry on a 15W processor?
Valve's Steam Deck has revolutionised PC gaming, its 15W custom AMD processor exceeding expectations and doing a great job in delivering handheld triple-A experience - but Unreal Engine 5 may well be its toughest challenge yet, owing to its Nanite micro-geometry and RT-based Lumen lighting. This is next-gen - or rather current-gen - stuff, so whether the Deck can handle it is key to its longer term prospects. To put that to the test, we decided to see if we could run the latest version of Fortnite with all of these features in play - and the results are surprising.
