The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Twiilight Princess, for today.
No one sitting in the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles was particularly surprised when the lovable Reggie Fils-Aimes, in his traditionally charming style, told us Nintendo would release The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess on GameCube and Wii simultaneously, and on the Wii launch date. I guess, at best, we could say we were a bit surprised when he used the slightly technical term "separate SKUs" to describe the two different versions, but naturally that's only to establish that there are quite distinct differences between the two versions. For example, one's a giant badger.

It may not have had any GameCubes on its E3 stand this year, but that doesn't necessarily mean Nintendo's given up on the silly little joybox yet - with Zelda and Super Paper Mario still on the way, and a couple of others - DK Bongo Blast and Baten Kaitos Origins - also set for release this year.

Pre-E3: The emperor strikes back.
There's a lot of talk about how there are too many sequels knocking about these days, and how too many of them are too similar to their predecessors. But there's also an argument in favour of sequels which deliberately don't muck about too much with the original formula - if it worked well the first time, why not simply try to improve on it, rather than change it? After all, when you make a nice cup of tea, are you disappointed if it turns out to be very similar to the last one you drank? Are you tempted to, say, replace the milk with soy sauce, just to make it a bit "darker"? Why not just serve it in a nicer cup, perhaps with a saucer and everything?

E3: Onboard the Harmonix tour bus.
E3 is distinctly NOT rock and roll. Some of you might have visions of us running around a room packed with game developers, swigging Martinis and shooting the breeze about our Geometry Wars score, pausing to pose with totty and then sprinkling a few hundred inebriated words into a document. Which - well, to be fair, I am drunk - but the point is that the reality is different. Really we all just stand around moaning, play some games while being jostled by thousands of people, who inexplicably paid $200 to wander around the same room as us collecting brochures and then pass out with six bags on each trunklike arm, before slugging our way crosstown to hammer two thousand words into a vaguely coherent, you know, thing. Me-do.

E3: Too easy, more like.
Microsoft is surely counting its blessings with two former Nintendo-centric developers showing at this years E3. Obviously, Silicon Knights' previous epic Eternal Darkness helped fill a void within the first year of the GameCube lineup, and SK is back again to provide a similar favour for Microsoft. Comparisons between these two games seem natural. Particle effects, colour schemes, and sweeping cinematic in-game camera are emphasised in both games, which creates an auteur atmosphere for players of Too Human and Eternal Darkness.
