Out in, er, December. Hmm.
Microsoft's grand plan to get Xbox and PC gamers fragging from the same shotgun took a big step this week with the announcement of the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows - effectively just a wired Xbox 360 controller. Because they work with Windows. Ahaaaaa.

Review | Dragonshard
Dungeons and Dragons with robots?!
Dungeons & Dragons. You can almost hear younger siblings choking to death on polyhedral dice. Except no: the role-playing element has been discarded, and what remains is a click-beast of lesser resource management. Dragonshard is, remarkably, only the second RTS to be based on the popular paper/pencils past time (the first being the long-lost Blood & Magic from the ancient era of 1996). It goes without saying that Dragonshard is, like Warcraft III, a character skewed RTS world of goblins, orcs, swords, sorcerers, giant robots... Hang on, a robot?

Does Pacman have a ghost of a chance on the DS?
Well, this is either going to open with some sort of remark about the 25th anniversary of Pacman, or about how the DS is finally coming into its own. Spin the wheel... tikka tikka tikka tik tik tik tiiik tiiiiik... clunk. It's the DS.

Why should I! (Oof.)
With the DOOM movie set to do Hellish things in the US this Friday (probably), key cast members including The Rock, Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike have started talking about the possibility of a sequel - and while producers John Wells and Lorenzo di Bonaventura are reticent when it comes to the question of what happens next (or so they claim - it doesn't appear to have stopped them gassing about it), it sounds like there's a decent amount of enthusiasm for the idea.

Feature | What's New? (14th October 2005)
This weeks releases.
That old adage about comic book games all being rubbish is certainly, well, an adage, but thanks to the efforts of developers like Neversoft, Treyarch and Capcom it's never likely to become a complete truth. Which is SUPER news for Marvel, whose trust in directors like Sam Raimi's also seen the one about comic book films all being rubbish take a hit too. Pity they decided to ruin things again by taking the beat-'em-up licence away from Capcom and giving it to EA - a company with, at the time at least, absolutely no real beat-'em-up credibility whatsoever.

Review | Midway Arcade Treasures 3
In case you need another retro fix…
Morning retro campers! Welcome to barrel-scraping territory where everything's a 'classic' and a 'treasure' if it, you know, it once appeared in an arcade. Having just trawled through the annals (or should that be anals?) of Tecmo's 'classic' retro history, we were in no mood to be fobbed off again with a pile of stinking detritus masquerading as jolly retro fodder - so forgive us if we're just a little stroppy with Midway's latest collection of old long-forgotten hits.

Review | F.E.A.R.
Frighteningly good.
There's a quote I've got stuck to the outside of my monitor, which, while borderline fruity, is something I always enjoy reading. It goes, "The art of punctuation is of infinite consequence in writing; as it contributes to the perspicuity, and consequently to the beauty, of every composition." Glancing at it again this morning, it struck me that that's precisely how FEAR behaves. It's a game that seeks to embolden action sequences through the lucidity of slow motion, and with help from technology that taps deep wells of environmental detail consequently beautifies the composition in ways that nothing else can. Nothing. Not even Half-Life 2. Good quote, that - I'm glad I stuck it over the top of the "I OWN YOU!" sticker.

Review | Tecmo Classic Arcade
Everyone else is doing it, so why can't Tecmo?
There's only so much nostalgia any balanced human being should be subjected to at any one time. Before long, the numbers involved start to compute in your increasingly frazzled brain and it slowly dawns on you that a quarter of a century has passed since these games blooped and bleeped away in that smoky old arcade you used to frequent.

Review | Taito Legends
Sometimes nostalgia is as good as it used to be
There are problems with Copyright, and the Games Industry has a problem with its old games. In fact, most of the time, you'd think the industry doesn't want you to know that old games have ever existed, and they're prepared to use Copyright Law to shut down emulation sites that allow you to play those old games; games from which those companies are no longer making any money, and if they had any decency would offer a blanket license of free of charge to those of us keeping some of mankind's finest creations alive. But no, they want to suppress these games because they are ashamed of them.

Review | Buzz: The Music Quiz
Your living room may never be the same again.
Let's face it, quiz games to date have been utter mind-numbing cash-in rubbish. Take the most popular to date, which is "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" - the UK's first million-selling game, fact fans. The problems here were that a) Chris Tarrant benefited from every sale and b) there just weren't enough questions. An hour or so into proceedings and you could practically guarantee that everyone - including Harry the dog - knew the answers to even the most obscure poser, and started getting really irritated with Tarrant's smug rubber face. Activision's The Weakest Link wasn't much better, and let's not even mention Sky Sports Football or ChampMan Quiz. Oops. Too late.
