  5. Popular Baldur's Gate hero Minsc is seen here, up close, escaping from the bloodied jaws of a mimic chest.

The paladin class is coming to the early access version of Baldur's Gate 3. It's the headline addition in Patch 9 which, I'm afraid, sounds like it will be the last major content update to the early access build before the game's full release in August 2023.

  10. The Callisto Protocol on PS4 and Xbox One - the beginning of the end for cross-gen?

Digital Foundry | The Callisto Protocol on PS4 and Xbox One - the beginning of the end for cross-gen?

A game clearly designed for new consoles works on the old... just.

The Callisto Protocol is one of the most visually advanced games currently available. With extremely high quality assets paired with multiple ray tracing effects, it packs some truly superb visuals - at least if you're playing on a high-end console or PC - but despite its remarkable graphics, The Callisto Protocol is a cross-gen title, which means it also ships on last-gen consoles, including the nine-year old base machines. So how did Striking Distance Studios manage to cram this game onto the PS4 and Xbox One? Is last-gen Callisto serviceable, or do the cuts simply run too deep? And if so, is this perhaps indicative of the beginning of the end for cross-gen development?

We've all done it before. You need a picture for an assignment or presentation, you head to Google and find the perfect image. But it's got a huge watermark across it. It's not like it's being used for profit, or it's going to be seen by thousands of people, so it's probably fine.

  21. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide review - a horde of minor flaws can be overcome by faith

If I were writing this a couple of weeks ago, when Warhammer 40,000: Darktide had only just launched and when reviews typically tend to go out, I'd have warned you to maybe hold off a little longer. I'd have told you it was a little too demanding for most PCs, that its store was miserly for a full-priced game, that it had a little too much jank and crucially, a little too few of those intangible, in-between features that can make or break a multiplayer game. Thankfully for Darktide though, I'm not. Now, a couple weeks into its life, there are still gaps and flaws and little quibbles that can get in the way of the fun - but crucially, the fun is there, it's a little easier to reach than it was a few weeks ago, and it really is a blast.
