UK Charts: Number one debut for Lara's return

Strong start for new Tomb Raider despite long delays and critical panning.

Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness took the top spot in the UK sales charts this week, selling more copies in its first week than any other previous Tomb Raider title - while Sony's Eye Toy: Play made a solid start at number two.

    Whiptail joins the Gangland

    Insert gangster movie quote here.

Postal 2 publisher Whiptail Interactive has announced the next title to come out of its sick little camp. Gangland, developed by the Danish team MediaMobsters, apparently blends real-time strategy, role-play and simulation gaming with a "totally new" type of in-game combat. The player, as one of four Sicilian brothers, works his way up through the family, setting up protections rackets, threatening locals, prostituting lovely lady folk, and 'silencing' people by whatever means necessary.

Reports from late last week suggest that the movie rights to Metroid that Nintendo flogged to Warren Zide and Craig Perry back in January of this year have now expired, more or less ruling out a big screen appearance Samus Aran any time in the near future. Good news or bad news? We're pretty sure we'll get over it.

    Joint Operations announced

Nothing to do with 'funny cigarettes', we're assured.

While NovaLogic is busy slipping other parts of its tactical action property, it has taken the opportunity to announce a new title to add to its healthy wallet of soldier sims. Joint Operations is a multiplayer-centric warfare game set in a collapsing Indonesia in the near future.

    NovaLogic slips its sabre

Black Hawk Down expansion has to wait until spring.

NovaLogic's extraneously titled Delta Force - Black Hawk Down: Team Sabre expansion pack has slipped to spring 2004. It's not clear what the reason behind the slippage is, and it seems a little strange considering the pack only contains three new single player campaigns (two set in Colombia and one in Iran's island oilfields) and extra multiplayer features, albeit with 30 new multiplayer maps. Ah well.

    Preview | Viewtiful Joe

    Capcom's best game in ages.

Hello my pretties. It's time for another spellbinding journey into the world of my relationship with Japanese Cube imports. Or, at least, it would be, if it wasn't 3:59 in the morning and this feature didn't have to be online by nine. You see, every time I've stopped playing Viewtiful Joe over the last 24 hours to try and write something, nothing's happened. I've sat here, prodding the odd key and reading over my notes, chewing my imaginary spectacles and occasionally sighing pensively, and the best I've come up with is about fourteen variations on "well, cripes, I didn't expect it to be this good." We almost got to the "I am a fish"/handprint scenario this time, chaps, so apologies in advance, but I'm going to have to just ramble through it in the hope that when the sun comes up we'll be looking at a reasonable, albeit meandering explanation of why Freeloader or Jap Cube owners should fire up Internet Explorer and Ctrl-Enter hastily in the direction of their nearest importer right now.

    Review | Midnight Club II

    Xbox joins the club.

Midnight Club II is one of the fastest, most challenging and most addictive arcade racing games ever to appear on the PS2, with an extensive single player campaign backed up by a simple, but satisfying online mode. But as superb as the PS2 version undoubtedly was it harboured a few niggling elements that we were hoping the Xbox port would address; namely a lack of online voice comms (grrr), no online rankings, and visuals that were slightly rough around the edges.

    EALA working on Generals expansion

15 new missions, nine AI generals, aaand a W of an MD.

EA has announced that its Los Angeles studio is developing an expansion pack for Command & Conquer Generals, due out in late 2003. "Zero Hour" introduces three new campaigns comprising 15 single player missions, and a new Generals Challenge mode, which has nine distinct armies and generals to overcome. Once defeated, players will be to use conquered armies online. New objectives will include destroying the US fleet in the Mediterranean, infiltrating intelligence buildings and capturing some of those pesky weapons of mass destruction.

    Click, click, moo.

Microsoft sends word that it's about to re-release its animal ogling and management sim Zoo Tycoon. However, this isn't your common-or-garden Zoo Tycoon, oh no, this is Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection. The pack which is due out sometime this summer will feature the original title and both of its expansion packs, Dinosaur Digs and Marine Mania. But that's not all! The pack will also feature a brand new Endangered Species pack, handing the player access to 40 new buildings and objects and 12 endangered animals.

Unreal 2 to get MP patch

"Lack of multiplayer is a temporary issue".

Epic Games VP Mark Rein made an impromptu appearance on Atari's Unreal 2 board yesterday to reveal that Legend is currently beavering away on a free downloadable multiplayer component for the game, due for release... well, soon we imagine. Whether or not anybody cares enough about Unreal 2 any more to actually play multiplayer with it is, of course, another matter entirely.

    Download EyeToy videos

    And buy it! Fools!

Fresh from being assaulted by Lara Croft on Saturday, this writer quickly made for Virgin Megastore, still aiming to pick up an EyeToy, particularly after some ignorant bastard in front of us took one look and said "Camera thing - total waste of time," like he knew what he was talking about. He then bought Tomb Raider. We saw him. Wanker.

Remap the keys without crashing the game.

Lara is all over the UK. We know this because some malformed urchin in a GAME T-shirt attempted to decapitate us on Saturday morning - by thrusting her ample packshot bosom into our startled faces. "Here for the new Tomb Raider?" he asked with a smug grin. "No, we're here to buy Pokemon cards, so get stuffed."

Review | Medieval: Total War - Viking Invasion

Rob joins the Vikings. We're not all that surprised.

Reviewing an expansion pack for a game is always an interesting task, so let's make something clear from the outset - if you're reading this, I'm going to assume that you've played and enjoyed Medieval: Total War, a rather wonderful and completely engrossing, if very hardcore, PC strategy title which we awarded a coveted 9/10 score when we reviewed it last October. If you haven't played Medieval, go and buy a copy of that before you even consider the expansion pack; if you didn't enjoy Medieval, or it didn't appeal to you, look elsewhere, because there's nothing here to change your mind.

Better than Burnout 2 and Midnight Club 2? Or just madder?

Driving around real-life cities is nothing new, and yet here we are in the middle of 2003 clocking up 10-hour sessions on Midtown Madness. You'd think that with Midnight Club 2 and Burnout 2, we'd be fixed for arcade racers by now, but apparently not.

    Max Payne 2 teaser site

    Just the Remedy.

We don't normally announce official websites for reasons we're sure we don't have to go into, but since it's such a big game, you might want to keep an eye on the Max Payne 2 teaser site, which launched this week. There's not much there yet - not even shiny versions of our leaked screenshots, sadly - but you can find a couple of wallpapers and AIM buddy icons, and a screensaver to spruce up your PC, if you're into that sort of thing.

    What's New?

This news item is certified Tomb Raider free.

EG's trusty Simpsons calendar informs us that it's Independence Day today, but fortunately nobody's planning to subject us to Will Smith uploading computer viruses to aliens, or a bloody Mel Gibson planting his flag in Jason Isaacs' chest. In fact, here in the UK our TV schedules are almost blank on the subject - although we might check out "And Now the Screaming Starts" around midnight, if Bo Selecta hasn't driven us to suicide. Thank God we've got games to play, eh?

Ah, TRON. We'd imagine pretty much any child of the 80s can remember Disney's TRON and those pioneering visuals effects, that bizarre electro soundtrack and, of course, the light cycles. Upon hearing news that Disney was planning a new game based in the TRON universe, we got a little bit excited and probably jiggled a bit. We won't tell you what we did when we saw the screenshots.

    Full Spectrum Warrior video

So exactly how much of the Spectrum are we talking about here?

You might remember E3 a couple of months back. You might also remember that apart from Half-Life 2, there was another game that really did kick up quite a fuss as it crept up on everybody from behind the bushes and waved its weaponry about in their faces. That game was Pandemic Studios' Full Spectrum Warrior. Well, GameSpy is finally giving us all the chance to see what all the fracas was about with a monstrous 505MB demo video.

    Review | NBA Street Vol.2

Tom catches up with his backlog. Or rather, slams it like a bitch-ass punk.

I have absolutely no interest in snowboarding, skateboarding or ice hockey. I really don't. And yet SSX, Tony Hawk and NHL are all games that all grace my TV screen with indecent regularity. Why? Because the artistry of a truly brilliant arcade sports game can slam dunk apathetic ignorance without breaking a sweat. NBA Street Volume 2 is one of those.

    Konami Revolutionises Karaoke

    Cue Eurogamer Michael Jackson marathons.

To my knowledge, none of the Eurogamer staff have actually been involved in any kind of karaoke, unless it's shower karaoke. Actually, the suspicion is that Rob might have indulged a bit while in Japan earlier in the year, but the idea of Rob gripping a microphone and wailing is a little bit too grotesque a vision even for us. Anyway, it looks like we could finally fulfil our wanton desire for karaoke action in the office should Konami's Karaoke Revolution head this way.
