No spice
We don't really understand why, but if IGN is to be believed then Nintendo of America will only release the Game Boy Player peripheral in Jet Black, while Japanese punters enjoy purple, spice (orange), platinum (silver), and of course black options.

Eight modes, 16 riders, same delightful gameplay
Climax hit us for six with their surprisingly excellent MotoGP - our second favourite Xbox racer behind Project Gotham Racing, and about the only game which escaped our Top 50 due to stupidity - and plan to do it all again this year with an updated MotoGP 2.

Review - Kristan takes on the best GBA footy game we've played
Anyone who's played footy games as long as EG has will know two basic facts: firstly that a stock of spare controllers is necessary during particularly competitive occasions, and secondly that handheld attempts at recreating the beautiful game are almost always complete rubbish. Admittedly the arrival of the GBA 18 months ago helped matters a touch, but even the best that have arrived in that period are half arsed approximations of the 32 bit era.

The year is 2044, as far as we remember...
The year is 2044. But as an amnesia-ridden fugitive in the sights of a heavily armed squad of shocktroop soldiers, that's probably not something John Chaser thinks about.

Review | Big Mutha Truckers
Review - recent addition Keith is sent on a road trip for his first assignment
Trucking games are something of a rarity in the gaming world, with the nice but shamefully brief "18 Wheeler" being the only title to spring immediately to mind. Now Empire has entered the diesel-guzzling arena with "Big Mutha Truckers", an arcade racer with strategic trading elements. Armed with just a half-melted Yorkie bar, I jumped into my rig to find out just what in tarnation the fuss is all about.

MS announces US pricing for Xbox PSO
Another pricey port of an online game
Microsoft and Sega's plans for Phantasy Star Online grow ever more bizarre, as MS has announced that the US version will not talk to versions from other regions (citing security reasons), that the game will require Xbox Live to play, even if you don't plan to go online (hangover from the Japanese version which launched with Live over there), and that the notorious "hunter's license" will return, meaning an $8.95-per-month subscription fee for anybody planning to play beyond a two month free trial.

No new release date either
Damn. We were quite looking forward to a couple of new units for MechAssault, and seeing how the age-old tradition of Capture The Flag translated to the mechy world of Day 1 Studios' third person shooter, but it doesn't look like we will any time soon. Microsoft has helpfully announced that the promised free downloadable content will not appear on Xbox Live "in January". Yes, we spotted that. What's perhaps more upsetting though is that no new release date has been confirmed. We are of course assured that as soon as a decision is made we will be informed. Pfft.

Sonic Adventure remake out soon
So does this mean they've run out of 16-bit remakes?
"Two new Sonic the Hedgehog games to debut this summer from Sega," the blue blur's American minders have proclaimed. What this actually translates to though is the forthcoming release this May of Sonic Adventure DX - wait for it - "exclusively for Nintendo GameCube", with Sonic Pinball Party shipping in June for GBA.

FreeLoader for Feb 5th, AR for Feb 12th
Date confusion
"It's here!" beams Action Replay/FreeLoader Datel's announcement. "No it isn't!" we scream back, ever mindful that this mythical piece of software has yet to grace our desks. Still, the pandemonium surrounding this particular version of "It's here!" is more tangible and believable than previous attempts to drum up interest.

Publishers, punters: walk this way for your first look at Gumshoe
Young British developer Hiding Buffalo is looking for a publisher for its 1930s film noir inspired American adventure. The game sees the player take on the old-school role of a private detective working for a variety of clients solving crime novel style puzzles, adopting a style of gameplay the developer is only too willing to remind us eschews the fantasy and sci-fi conventions of the industry.

"In keeping with the recent developments in the sport"
The Indy Racing League is no more. This is no doubt the puzzling news that greeted Codemasters, fresh from signing - and announcing - its own licensed game based on the franchise, and prompted last Friday's press release entitled "Codemasters' Indy Racing League becomes 'IndyCar Series' a the US motor sport series unveils its new name".

First Impressions - Kristan gets to grips with the latest instalment in the long running C&C series
Can it really be ten years since Westwood released the wonderful Dune II? Apparently it is, and that makes both the writer of this feature and the real-time strategy genre really quite old. But some things age rather nicely, and we were unusually excited when the postie turned up with the latest in the ageing Command & Conquer series.

Review | Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome
Review - EA's quick sharp expansion for BF1942 arrives on our desks, and Martin promptly steals it
In the four months or so since our review of Battlefield 1942, the game has fast become one of the most popular multiplayer games in existence. Obviously seeing a prime opportunity to make a bit of extra cash on the back of this tremendous success, EA have seen fit to furnish fans with the Road to Rome expansion pack - can it successfully pick up where DiCE left off with the original BF1942, or is it more of a pathetic stumble in a vague forward kind of direction?

Updated - A long time ago, in a galaxy far away...
It looks as though the Xbox system will be dragged into the Clone Wars conflict, joining the side of the Lucas/Activision alliance. Republic spies in the IGN sector managed to obtain the information from secret Electronics Boutique documents recently, hinting that in the US at least, the escalating conflict could span all three systems as soon as March.

Brute Force to get Live extras
And System Link play
Digital Anvil's near-mythical squad based Xbox shooter Brute Force will feature System Link functionality for up to 16 players, and will benefit from downloadable content - mostly new maps and campaigns. A word of warning though - a quick scan of the Microsoft press release reveals no instances of the word 'free'. Could these sizeable extras be premium content?

Multi GBA
On the face of it, Bubble Bobble Old and New on the GBA doesn't really need any gimmicks to sell. Heck, we'd buy it on the strength of the name. But publisher Empire obviously feels that in the climate of thrift which apparently grips all GBA owners at the moment (unless, heaven forbid, they simply won't buy into repackaged ports for the remainder of the console's life?), it makes sense to offer a little incentive.

Golly. What a splendid day to be out. On a typical morning stroll to the newsagent you can look forward to being pelted with snowballs by subhuman bands of skateboard-owning-but-not-riding ingrates, falling flat on your arse thanks to a patch of black ice and freezing your nuts off. Sorry, what was so great about the snow again?
