Review | Tony Hawk's Pro Skateboarding

    Board-mastah reviewed

You wouldn't expect a skateboarding game to amount to much, really. Surely it could only be as good as 1080 on wheels and dry land, right? Wrong. The level of variety, excitement and just sheer quality of the gameplay available here is utterly astonishing. No word of a lie, myself and a friend spent six hours straight playing the various 2 player battle modes and attempting challenges in single player... he left my house at 2am. Controlling the game is simpler than I would have expected. The moves you can pull off are extremely simple to execute, because what counts is getting enough air in order to pull of huge combinations of moves which really rakes the points in. No one move is more complicated than a combination of a direction and two button presses or vice versa, and each character has a specific set of unique moves, including a main special stunt and other hidden specials. What this means is that there is a fair amount of value in trying out different characters, instead of the only difference between the players being their costumes.

    Interview | The bleem! Team

    The bleem! creators, interviewed

Bleem! is a name that Sony just wish would go away. The team behind the famous Playstation emulator have the unrestrained right to ship bleem! all over the world, thanks to the judicial system at work in the States. Enraged, Sony have since been beating down the door of court after court, attempting to gain some sort of preventative injunction against the American company responsible for the software, which they claim damages Playstation sales. I managed to conduct an interview with the guys behind bleem, shortly after their return home from E3 in Los Angeles, where they debuted their latest product, affectionately termed bleemcast!

    Review | Guilty Gear

    2D beat-em-up reviewed

Straight from the annals of classic 2D beat-em-ups come the Arcade, Versus and Training options. They seem to have made up the core pre-requisite in most 2D fighting game design documents for many a year. There are 10 Combatants, each of whom heralds a few unique special abilities. The ferocity of these abilities is dictated by the increasing rage and animosity toward the opponent, represented by a Power Bar at the foot of the screen. Vibrations from the Dual Shock controller, which is fully supported by the game, further demonstrate this ferocity. While many of the Capcom and SNK titles that dominate this genre offer well-known characters that we can relate to, Guilty Gear's crew aren't too shabby. I felt a lot more endeared to them than I had expected to as I struggled through the Single Player game, and while there is always a sort of standoffishness about playing with any beat-em-up character in Multi Player, I developed my favourites very quickly and learnt how to most effectively make use of their respective arsenals. The actual combat was frenetic - the action is fast, fast, fast, and the combination manoeuvres border on the absurd. The developers have evidently spent a lot of time balancing the game out however, because the actual length of the bouts is not significantly less than most 2D beat-em-ups, presumably thanks to the time and effort put into creating the right balance of executive speed and damage infliction.
