  2. Shadow of the Ninja Reborn: peak pixel art from Tengo Project

Digital Foundry | Shadow of the Ninja Reborn: peak pixel art from Tengo Project

A 1990 NES release returns transformed.

Shadow of the Ninja Reborn is a beautiful, hard-as-nails action game from developer Tengo Project. The fourth entry in Tengo's 16-bit taste remake series, it's also arguably the most ambitious. Prior releases from Tengo Project, such as Pocky and Rocky Reshrined and The Ninja Warriors Once Again, were based on games that already existed in 16-bit form, making the transition easier to imagine - but this new game is based on an 8-bit NES game instead. As a result, everything needed to be completely re-imagined from the ground-up. From gameplay to visuals and audio, this is a masterpiece of pixel art action that simply must be experienced if you have any love for classic gaming.

  7. Star Wars Outlaws pushes the latest PC technologies hard - and the results are stunning

Digital Foundry | Star Wars Outlaws pushes the latest PC technologies hard - and the results are stunning

But technical issues and general polish need addressing.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was Digital Foundry's choice for 2023's best graphics of the year and so it was with some degree of excitement that we received review code for Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft Massive's high-tech Snowdrop Engine has returned, once again delivering some of the best visuals we've seen. The key technological foundations remain: RT global illumination for diffuse lighting and reflections, volumetric fog, clouds and sky, and extreme quality detail and texture work. On top of that, PC users can take visuals to the next level with RTX Direct Illumination, making every light and shadow ray-traced. There are flaws and issues that need improvement, but there's no doubt that this is another key showcase title for the PC format.

  11. A huge tree in a desert setting in front of some hills in Arco

"Bite-size" is one of those terms that gets a bad rap. This may be because it conjures memories of cramming for GCSEs with the help of the Beeb, or because, when deployed in the world of cuisine, it often translates to: "slightly less than you paid for." But in games, bite-size can be a wonderful size. WarioWare is bite-sized: the entire history of interaction delivered in four-second gulps. Into the Breach is bite-sized: a dizzying well of strategy that you can dip into in the time it takes to send an email.

  22. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a doggedly faithful remake - but new controls have new consequences

How far is too far for a remake - and how safe is too safe? For Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a sumptuous Unreal Engine 5 remake of a 2004 classic, finding a winning answer to this question has led to a great many careful choices at Konami. The combat and camera are updated, the visuals are starkly improved, and yet the original's DNA still courses through the experience. Perhaps even more-so than another ongoing remake effort - Silent Hill 2, as handled by Bloober team - this project rather prefers a more literal approach. In playing its opening 90 minutes, covering the Virtuous Mission prologue, it's also clear that a deep respect for Hideo Kojima's 2004 original steers Delta towards a stricter 1:1 recreation than you might expect.
