    Preview | Evergrace

    Visually impressive RPG previewed

Evergrace is a beautiful game - thanks to the Playstation 2's use of light and colour. Instead of the clear-cut, but not terribly detailed approach of many PC titles running at resolutions of 640x480, Evergrace pushes back the boundaries of console graphics systems. Every blade of grass, every droplet of water, everything in the game shimmers and glitters; the use of dynamic lighting is impressive. To give you an idea - consider how shocking it was to see Quake2 on the PC powered by 3d acceleration back when 3d cards were only just filtering through to the mainstream. The leap in quality and quantity of effects is truly astounding. In a way the game does mimic Zelda on the N64; you'll certainly be right at home if you've played that title. You control a young fellow called Yu-Iterald, or if you're that-way inclined, a lass named Shalami. Each character has several movements, each of which befits a certain combat situation. By pressing Select, the player can access a Weapons Configuration menu where weapons and armour can be rotated.

Warlock sent word that Blade Universe have posted their lastest Screenshot of the Week (SotW) for Rebel Act Studios' fantasy hack-fest Blade. This latest shot shows off a weapon rack, and gives you a good idea the pain you will be able to inflict when the game is released later this year. We're talking hammers, swords, staffs, big-ass shields - you won't find a RailGun amongst them, but then again, you can't dismember your opponent limb-by-limb like you can with a 4-foot length of cold-forged steel. Bring it on!

    Review | Gran Turismo 2

    The racing marathon returns

If you're thinking that GT2 is going to be a vastly different game to it's predecessor, you'll be sadly mistaken. Basically, it's more of the same, with the onus firmly on not fixing that which isn't broken. One of the main differences between the two is the sheer volume of cars available for selection. Whereas GT gave you something like 250 cars, GT2 gives you a whopping 600! The sheer variety of makes and models is incredible, with a total of 33 manufacturers included. 19 of these are European, an area decidedly lacking in GT. GT2 also has a bigger assortment of tracks to hurtle round. There are 20 normal, and 6 dirt tracks. The dirt tracks really are a great addition to the road based tracks we're used to. You will need to choose the proper wheel type for rallying, or just to look cool in replays! This is done from the wheel selection screen, another new feature. A total of nine wheel manufacturers are present. The most notable of the game improvements though, has to be the inclusion of car damage. Collisions and scrapes now have a knock-on effect to your vehicle's performance. This means you can no longer simply rush a corner, knocking the other cars out of the way. Darn!

Review | Invictus : In The Shadow of Olympus

    Fantasy RPG / RTS reviewed

Invictus is (rather loosely) based on ancient Greek mythology - the goddess Athena has returned from mentoring Odysseus, who went on to kill Poseidon's son on his way home from the Trojan war. Poseidon is none too pleased, and dismisses the whole thing as a fluke.

    Review | Slave Zero

    City-trawling mech game reviewed

Do you even care what the plot was in a game like Doom, or Quake? I never did, I just played them, but Infogrames evidently don't subscribe to the school of forgettable storylines - instead they've practically written a book about Slave Zero! Megacity lives atop a ruined Beijing, 500 years into the future, and is made up of "decks", the lower ones being the residential areas, the middle ones being military in focus and there are plenty of other areas, including laboratories and sewers, all of which you'll see during the game. The game is based around a mission structure, of which there are 15, set all over the city. You're guided by a "controller", who explains to you what's to be done and such. Controlling your mech in the PC version would be very simple indeed, using the time-honoured (and now well-established) combination of mouse and keyboard. On the Dreamcast that sort of combo is of course feasible with the right peripherals, but the mouse doesn't yet exist and Slave Zero doesn't support the keyboard anyway. The controller must therefore be used to handle the game, and it must be said that it's a smidgeon less than intuitive, especially for perpetual first person gamers. Thankfully a little perseverance soon gets you going and the game is easy enough after a while.
