Last Thursday evening, Channel 4 aired an episode of their current affairs programme "Dispatches" titled "Video Nasties", taking a look at the effect of violent games.

Our UK release dates list has been updated again, this time adding the latest release information from THQ, whose semi-sequel to X : Beyond The Frontier, "X-Tension", is due for release on April 28th. We've also got updated information from Virgin, with the UK release date for MDK2 slipping back another three weeks to the end of May.

Fox Interactive sent word that their hit 3D platform game sequel, Croc 2, will be appearing on the PC at the end of next month, featuring a two player "OmniPlay" mode, new bosses including "Cannon Boat Keith" (no, really), and a trader by the name of "Swap Meet Pete". Sadly his name won't be localised to "Car Boot Sale Dale" for the UK release of the game...

Earlier this week Aureal announced that most of their senior management had quit the company en masse. Today Tech Extreme have interviewed Aureal's Product Manager, talking mostly about the latest version of A3D and its development. There's almost nothing about the company's current problems (apparently he can't talk about that yet), but Tech Extreme are promising a follow-up interview with more information about what the future holds (if anything) for Aureal.

John Carmack, lead programmer over at id Software updated his .plan with his memories of Seumas McNally, the talented lead programmer over at Longbow Digital Arts who tragically passed away about a week ago. John met him through the Startlight Foundation, an organization that tries to grant wishes to seriously ill kids. Be sure to check out GameDev's.com memorial article which is a VERY good read.

The official Dawn of Darkness website (an RPG Total Conversion for Quake II) with a little update on this total conversion, they are still working on Episode 2 and they will be getting up to full speed this week. The team have also released two short mp3 songs from this very popular TC, be sure to grab the demo immediately.

Rich Carlson (formerly of Ion Storm and Looking Glass) sent word of an article over on MobyGames about "Abandonware", and the rights and wrongs of pirating old games that software companies no longer sell or support. It's pretty long, but worth a look if you're interested in classic games.

The Firing Squad got a very interesting article up, featuring some famous PC developers opinions on the notorious, X-Box. Be sure to check out the opinions of famous developers such as, Jake Simpson from Raven Software, Brandon "Greenmarine" Reinhart of Epic Games, Ryan Feltrin from Gray Matter and a bunch of other great developers.

Ryan "Ridah" Feltrin of Gray Matter Interactive (formerly Xatrix Entertainment) updated his .plan file stating that he has gone and compiled a dedicated Linux Kingpin v1.21 binary set. Here's a little snip from the plan:

Lucas Pawelczyk informed me that to celebrate the Grand Opening of Add-on Universe (Levels, Skin, Mods and More) they are holding a little contest, where you can win a signed copy of Sin, a copy of Bleem and a Sin t-shirt. The Adrenaline Vault have gone Soldier crazy, with a preview of the third person action game based on the dodgy Kurt Russell sci-fi movie of the same name from a couple of years ago, as well as an interview with one of the team behind the game, and some rather tasty screenshots of the game in action.

The future of Aureal, the company behind the popular A3D sound system, hangs in the balance today with the news that the company's CEO, technical and financial officers, and most of the other senior staff members have resigned en masse for reasons as yet unknown.

John informed me that GA-Source got some details on the engine featured in the upcoming action mech game, MechWarrior 4. They received these spicy details from the producer, TJ Wagner, this game is scheduled for a Q4 release.

(bless you) has posted an interview with Tom Hall, the mad genius behind Ion Storm's promising looking Quake 2 engined RPG, Anachronox (gezundheit). The interview is actually a few months old, but on the plus side it includes a few new screenshots of the game in action.

This week's interview here on EuroGamer is with Zsolt Vamosi (try saying that after a few beers!). Zsolt is the CEO of Philos Labs, the Hungarian company behind the strategy game Theocracy, which we reviewed yesterday.

The fly boys over at SimHQ have interviewed Bubba Wolford, now a PR man at 3dfx but formerly hardware editor of .. SimHQ. It's a small world. The interview mostly covers 3dfx's new graphics cards, which are due some time soon.

Due out today in the UK and reviewed yesterday here on EuroGamer, Theocracy is a real time strategy game with a difference, developed in eastern Europe but set in medieval Mexico.

Our friends over at SystemLogic have posted an interview with Dave Taylor of Transmeta, mostly talking about their new "Crusoe" processor. For those of you with a five minute attention span, Dave Taylor used to work at id Software and was involved in some of the early Linux porting efforts there.

Rebel Act Studios, the company behind third person action game Blade, is looking for a lead programmer for a new project they are working on. You'll need to be fairly fluent in Spanish as well as C though, as the company is based in Spain. For the full details, check this notice.

According to this story over on The Register, Intel's recently announced 1GHz Pentium III processor are still in very limited supply, and they are "initially working with customers that can provide the biggest impact in the consumer enthusiast segment at launch". What does this mean in practice? You won't see a boxed P3-1GHz in the shops until some time this summer ("third quarter" in marketing speak), and most system builders won't get any until then either!

So says tonight's episode of current affairs program "Dispatches" on Channel 4 here in the UK. Airing at 9pm, the program will cover video game violence, and apparently suggests that we're a bunch of homicidal maniacs. Should be interesting viewing...

The most violent game ever, with out blood? According to a news blurb over at Avault a bloodless edition of this extremely violent game will be released by Activision soon. So expect two versions on the shelves, one regular (with all the blood and gore) and the "tactical" version (with no violence at all).
