Microsoft's vision of Things To Come
You might be mistaken for thinking that the PC was dead as a gaming platform, given some of the comments that have been coming out of the gaming industry recently. Far from it, says Microsoft. But then, they would, wouldn't they?

It's interesting how a games company goes about making its money, the routes and angles it takes to make that few quid to get that new Ferrari you've been looking at. One of the big ways, that Joe Punter on the street would not realize, that letting someone else use, or licensing your game engine. The engine is the core code behind the game. Its interesting to hear that id Software make more money out of their engine licensing than they do from making actual games, licensing a game engine is by no means cheap! Some of the top games on the market use the engines from different games, Half Life uses a cross between the Quake 1 and Quake 2 engines, Soldier of Fortune uses the Quake 2 engine.

It is well documented about how much I loved the original Tribes , and indeed about how anxiously I await Tribes 2. It looks to be every bit a worthy successor to the original classic. The lucky lads over at Tribes 2 Players got to have a sit down with Mark Frohnmayer, Lead Programmer on the TRIBES 2 Dev Team. They speak about network code, one of the original tribes strongest features, and the making and breaking of a game like Tribes 2.

Processors come think and fast these days, every few months we can one that's faster, or bigger, or one with 'go faster stripes'. It's taken forever to assemble (cheers Spizzy) but we have the full set of demos from today's Euro-CPL qualifier event. BUT, due to a minor admin error (cheers Spizzy), many of the 200-odd demos have spaces in their window-long-filenames, which Quake3 can't handle. So just for tonight we bring you the Blokey vs Timber Final: Match 1 (556k), and Match 2 (510k). Tomorrow, some lucky person will sift through and replace all the spaces with underscores [well volunteered Geoff! - Ed]. It's been a long day, so please be patient.

After another tight final match, Timber walks away with the prize money and berth into the Stockholm tournament; the final score 8 : 6. Both players played to the full extent of their abilities, but suffering from a few awkward respawns, Blokey never looked like taking the lead. With a few frags in the final minute, Timber often waited the full ten seconds to spawn again, quite fearful of Blokey's wrath. Nonetheless, he was the better player. Congratulations on a great performance, Timber! Our coverage will be up very soon and demos will be up within an hour or two. Eurogamer - number one for live event coverage!

In breaking news, the Euro CPL qualifier is turning out to be just as nerve-wracking as the Euro 2000 final. Having beaten Timber into the Loser's Bracket already, Blokey came up against the Clan 9 member again - if Blokey wins, he wins. However, the game has just finished 15-5, meaning this is the Golden Goal of matches. Whoever wins this walks away with £500 and a paid flight out to Stockholm of the "Scandanavian Open". Stay tuned...

Meanwhile in the losers bracket, Luke beat Requiem 18 : 12. Timber will now play Luke, with the winner of that game going on to play Blokey (again) in the grand final. And because Blokey has come through the winners bracket, whoever plays him will have to beat him twice!
