    The Getaway

    Ferocious crime-based mayhem

The Getaway takes place over 50 square kilometres of Central London, photo-realistically portrayed (see the 6 exclusive screenshots dotted around the page for details!) from Kensington Palace to the Tower of London. The player takes past in blistering car chases and road-races, but also enters buildings on-foot to commit crimes… from bank robberies to gangland hits. More than 50 real vehicles have been recreated and all are capable of car-stunts in traditional Hollywood style. From the sound of the press release, it'll be Hollywood-physics all the way, with races down narrow alleyways and tyre-burning power slides. The living, breathing city sensation will be there as well, with pedestrians and other drivers occupying the streets of London. As you can see from the screenshots, the photo-realism is absolute. It's a stunningly gorgeous game, even in this unfinished state. Each car's bodywork is authentic, with Fed Ex and BT vans among others dashing about from place to place. With this sort of authenticity, we may well see missions including knocking off a Securicor van, robbing a Post Office or what-have-you. The permissions and credits listing in the manual will be unbelievable!

    Review | RollerCoaster Tycoon Review

    Theme park strategy game reviewed

Rollercoasters, essentially, are a curious concept. We go to the little ticket box (or if its a pay-at-the-gate theme park, join a queue that disappears into the horizon and quite possibly crosses a few international time zones), pay an extortionate sum, stand in a queue, caged into columns like cattle, then eventually, you reach the station, dozens of people bundle off the train and disappear out of sight ("Exit the train to your right!"), and with a sense of joy and adventure we step onto the train, and anticipate what will follow.

Feature | Jargon-Buster: Comparing Console Graphics Capabilities

    Graphically, who's the king?

One of the biggest assets of any games console in this day and age is its underlying graphical architecture. Many moons ago, it was a question purely of software, screenshots and format to carry the weight of the console. I bought my original Playstation on the strength of its launch titles and the fact that it was a CD-based 32bit system - and I dare say a lot of you will have as well. I had no particular interest in its graphical capabilities, nor in how they compared to rival machines. If my favourite developers and games genres weren't present, and it wasn't a next generation console, I was not going to be satisfied. The console industry has matured; gamers have matured. I no longer buy consoles based on games and graphics, I look at the big picture. If Console Y can pack more polygons to its punch than Console Z, I want to know what the real-world benefits of such a development are. Yet now that consoles seem to be converging upon a single point, technologically; the modern-day PC, the graphical capabilities, are going to carry the most weight. As such, the main consideration in purchasing a "next-generation" console should surely be its graphical processing power... In this feature, we're going to take a look at what each of the next-generation consoles is packing, graphically, and also to pick apart the various terms which may be blinding your judgement. Hopefully we'll come to some form of conclusion about who has the upper hand as well, but it may be too tight to call. Who knows, keep reading!

Sleeper hits are an oft-underdeveloped trend in the gaming industry. In this age of press hype and the internet, games are almost totally uncovered prior to their release, and so for the most part we know all there is to know about them by the time it comes to actually buying them.
