Survival horror title reviewed
Admittedly I was worried about this port. Having sat through an exhibition of how great the game was by my PSX-owning mate (that's as in "friend", not sexual in any way, you understand... erm...) several thousands of times, I wasn't entirely sure how the hugeness was going to fit into the little plastic thing. Still, wonders will never cease with this magic box of...magic...things. Anyway, all my fears were soon expelled (like a big Odour-Eater had come into the room and stamped gratuitously all over them) when I started up the console, jumped straight into the game and was mesmerised by what appeared to be a five minute long segment of FMV... on the Nintendo. FMV. Nintendo. Five minutes. This was superb, and I was amazed. Either I've been missing out on something, seeing as I was a late starter with the Nintendo and all, but I was truly astounded, I really didn't think this was possible. The short movie was the same as the one placed in the PSX version, and what the superbly rendered piece does is to set the scene perfectly, and before you even start to play the game the tentacles start to reach out of the screen and pull you into into the game's sick little world. But then I realised what Capcom had done to fit all this stuff in the cart, as I noticed quite heavy artefacting on the video, and that familiar mp3-style "warbling" on the audio samples, both the remnants of heavy compression techniques. But without getting into the piddling technicalities, I was still pretty excited by the time the opening in-game scene began and I was plopped into a flaming scene surrounded by the brain-craving living-dead.

The official Counter-Strike website has been updated with some new information of the next release (beta6.5) of this very popular Half-Life mod. They have also put together a zip file with all the first person weapon models that will help you convert any models to 6.5 when it's out. The reason they have to be converted is because all first person weapon models have to have a 2nd attachment point located at the place where the shell ejects from the gun. Grab that file here and visit CSnation for full information on this file.

Futuristic convict-a-thon previewed
Having glanced through the plot of MoHo, it becomes fairly obvious that for all its development maestros, it's a bit of a rip off of a certain book. Yet I don't ever recall the idea being used in interactive media, so I'll give Lost Toys the benefit of the doubt, and hey! It makes good sense; a plot where you are a prisoner of the State and are forced to compete in gladiatorial events against your fellow hard-time-hotel occupants. And for what? For entertainment! As a prisoner, you're sentence is life behind bars, a somewhat depressing prospect for an ambitious felon like yourself, and your only hope is to work your way up the ziggurat to get a short at becoming the People's Champion - the prize being your freedom. If you can overcome the scum of the universe that you'll be pitted against, you can walk away a hero and a free man.

Since its release last year, the Athlon processor has suffered from pretty poor motherboard support. Of course, for people blowing hundreds of pounds on an expensive processor, that's unacceptable and these consumers rightfully felt a bit upset. Thankfully though it looks as though this injustice could be at an end, with the release of the Epox 7KXA Athlon motherboard. Take a look at our review to find out what we think of it.

Review | Re-Volt
R/C racing title reviewed
Graphically Re-Volt is very impressive. I played the PC version to death last year and the Dreamcast is a wonderfully complete conversion. The sense of scale is very precise and your surroundings feel as though they are the right shape and size. Unlike other titles of its ilk, the cars don't look out of place due to their size imbalance. You couldn't mistake them for real cars, they're definitely R/C. The radio aerial flaps in the wind and they zoom around with the remarkable acceleration found in real R/C engines. As the cars swish and swoosh through the various environments, they reflect perfectly on the buffed up wooden floor and project slight shadows on the way. The lighting is pre-rendered, and the graphics are hardly Soul Calibur, but Re-Volt is still one of the better looking Dreamcast titles.

Those kerrrazy Barrysworld people have written up their account of the PC Zone Awards, laughing along with cynicism at the irreverant and mildly insane choices in many categories. Unlike our own Gaming Globes, these awards were not publicly voted for, instead relying on the opinions of the journalists at the heart of the magazine itself to cast their views. At least, that's the impression given by the article.

PCGamer UK is playing the guessing game with regard to Epic Games' incessant registration of domain names. The unexplained registration of unrealwarfare.com, .org and .net remains so, as do the registrations of ascension.org and ascensionengine.com. A little detective work provides some interesting hypotheses, but I doubt we'll know for sure for a good few weeks, probably even months yet. Still, Epic are a very open company on the whole, and are friendly with a lot of the gaming press, so there's bound to be some sort of announcement, official or otherwise, sooner rather than later.
