It's been five long years since Command & Conquer first introduced us to the Global Defense Iniative, the Brotherhood of Nod, and Tiberium. Its success helped spawned the whole real time strategy genre, and along with Red Alert and all the various mission packs and bundles that followed it's managed to shift somewhere in the region of 10 million units.

It's a Star Trek game Jim, but not as we know it...
The Star Trek franchise has seen something of a renaissance in recent years, and the trend looks set to continue into the new millenium with games like Raven's "Star Trek Voyager : Elite Force". But amongst the mass of Trek games due to appear over the next year, one of the most promising but least well known is "Star Trek : New Worlds" from Britain's own Binary Asylum.

Kurt is back in his tight black rubber stealth suit, and this time he's brought the Doc and Max the dog along for the ride...
Shiny's MDK was one of those games that got rave reviews from every magazine under the sun, but for some reason didn't sell very well. It had great graphics (for the time), lots of neat toys and weapons to play around with, and a unique visual style. Unfortunately it was also rather linear, but as third person shooters go it was ahead of its time.

Messiah puts in its second appearance at ECTS, this year with more content and less hype. Is it worth the wait?
Last year at ECTS the coming of Messiah was greeted by street preachers and a gospel choir outside the Olympia. This year the hype was much more subdued but the game itself was looking much better, with more gameplay on show and more impressive graphics and level design.

A look at Dark Reign II, Soldier Of Fortune, and Vampire, three of Activision's games due for release next year.
Although Activision once again spurned the crowded exhibition halls of ECTS this year, they were in London to demonstrate several of their games on Monday. Taking over the York Suite at the swanky Royal Garden Hotel must have cost them almost as much as a proper stand at ECTS would have done, but whatever their reasons it did at least give us a chance to check out some of their games in relative quiet.

A first person shooter based on a dodgy old heavy metal band... Is it as bad as it sounds?
When I first heard about KISS : Psycho Circus I was rather dubious. I'm not a KISS fan, and the idea of a game based around them was pretty unappealing. You only have to look at Ed Hunter (the Iron Maiden game) or Queen : The Eye to see just how bad this kind of tie in can be. In fact, even the game's designers were "skeptical at first" when they were approached with the idea.

Grand Theft Auto was released .. ooh .. back when it was safe to leave your door unlocked at night, and you could wander down the middle of a road wearing an orange robe and banging a tambourine without fear of being run over by some homicidal maniac in a flash car.

Microprose take the classic X-Com series into first person shooter territory.
The days of the classic X-Com games - all low resolution tiles, sprites, isometric viewpoints and sedate turn based combat - are long since gone, thank god. These days it's all texture mapped polygons, coloured lighting and fast paced real time battles.

Feature | Unreal Tournament UK Launch Party coverage
The big party on Sunday night was the Dreamcast launch. Unfortunately we didn't have tickets for that, so instead we went to the Unreal Tournament press event at The Playing Fields...
When Epic unveiled Unreal Tournament several months ago many people wrote it off as a Quake III Arena clone, and Unreal's initially poor netcode and wimpy weapons certainly didn't help either.

The full scoop on Warcraft III : Reign Of Chaos, announced by Blizzard at ECTS on Sunday.
Blizzard's announcement of "Warcraft III : Reign Of Chaos" at ECTS today might not have "changed the world" as their website has been promising, but it certainly changed the world of Azeroth... The game is aiming to "redefine the strategy genre", and there are some pretty major departures from previous Warcraft titles. Eye Candy
