Review | Ghostwire: Tokyo review - striking folklore inspirations don't quite meet their potential
I pity the ghoul.
From the moment you take control of Akito, they're everywhere. On the crosswalks and the pavements. In the hospital and the subway stations. Small, forlorn piles of clothing that once kept someone warm and dry. But now they lie in the same position they fell, sitting in untidy little clumps across the streets and buildings of Shibuya, kind of together but also kind of separate, like uneasy strangers at a dinner party.

Feature | Someone should make a game about: Deafness
We're not talking about The Quiet Man.
In the last few years, representations of disabilities in video games have been on the rise. However, with representations of deafness, everything is usually represented with the common stereotypes: characters are always shown using American Sign Language and are unable to hear at all. So far, we've not really had a game that spotlights a main character with deafness - and no, we don't want to talk about the abysmal The Quiet Man.

Endless falling exploit should now be addressed.

Feature | Aztech Forgotten Gods wants to do huge things
Dashing!
There is a point with kittens where they can basically break fundamental laws of physics. Where they can reach such speed and hectic enthusiasm that they can essentially run up a person, up the legs, the torso, navigate the fleshy intricacies of the face. They're not so much defying gravity as refusing to engage with it. Kittens have zip.

Digital Foundry | Is Unreal Engine 5 really the best choice for the next Witcher game?
Digital Foundry on what CDPR gains - and loses - in the tech transition.
CD Projekt RED has officially confirmed the existence of a new title based on The Witcher. In an announcement that reveals no concrete information on the game itself, the focus is very much on technology. The firm's in-house REDengine is being mothballed in favour of Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5. CDPR talks of a 'multi-year strategic partnership... [covering] not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine where relevant'. In essence, CDPR has chosen to throw in its lot with Epic Games, even though core Unreal Engine 5 technologies are still at an early state, with the firm helping to shape the tech 'with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences'. We're at the embryonic stages here as no development time frame or release dates are being shared at this time.

Review | Tiny Tina's Wonderlands review - happy vibes and hodgepodge design
Magic the blabbering.
At times, playing Tina Tina's Wonderlands can feel a little like working through a hangover. This is a game with UI that reads like brain fog, clouding out mechanics with half-tooltips and miniature smallprint and systems that are occasionally hinted at but rarely explained. It's also loud, in every sense, all booming explosions, yelling voiceovers and broad splashes of the high-contrast, primary colour scheme it paints jarringly over the world's otherwise slushy, sludgy browns and greens. A lot of noise. A lot of energy. A lot of ibuprofen and coffee needed to figure it out.

Digital Foundry | Kirby and the Forgotten Land: a tech design revolution for the series
A Nintendo icon finally transitions to full 3D - and the game is excellent.
For Nintendo, the transition from flat-plane 2D gaming to a full 3D experience kicked off in earnest with Super Mario 64 - with most key franchises following suit in short order. Except one. The Kirby series remained on a side-scrolling path across the generations and while I adore side-scrolling games, I couldn't help but wonder how this series might play in full 3D. Now, we finally have some answers. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the first fully 3D movement-based series entry and I love it.

Recommended | Kirby and the Forgotten Land review - a mouthful of magic
Gulp.
When Masahiro Sakurai first drew a couple of stumpy arms, big feet and blushing cheeks on a little pink blob, he was answering a call within Nintendo to make a game for everyone; a game, like the adorable Kirby himself, with no hard edges, where those who found Mario a mite too masochistic might find refuge. Ever since then Kirby has presented a refreshingly casual brand of adventure, serving breezy platformers where there's never even the threat of falling off a ledge; you can just puff yourself up with air and float away.
