Review | Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail Review - fresh air meets familiar ground
On the beaten path.
Dawntrail teases a swashbuckling adventure with newcomer Wuk Lamat, a Hrothgal on a quest to inherit the throne and become Dawnservant in Tural's Rite of Succession. You're on the precipice of something fresh and exciting, as you hop off the ship full of beans and raring to go. The first major city, Tuliyollal, gets the blood pumping with bombastic, big band music - kicking the bar high for the expansion's sweeping score, and thanks to the graphical overhaul, Final Fantasy 14 is the best it's ever looked. Areas feel densely populated and show-stopping zones play with verticality and scale to stunning effect; the land is vast, full of lush vegetation, and has never felt more alive.

Feature | Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree's progression issues could do with a bit of Nintendo magic
The Legend of Messmer.
I really do love Shadow of the Erdtree. I love its varied, spectacular environments. I love how its dungeons are more convincingly integrated into the world design, the map as a whole a puzzle to solve. I love the visual style, how emerging into each area is framed like a renaissance painting of a post-battle autumnal dreamscape.

Review | Flock review - the art of noticing
Baa none.
Down in central Brighton, where the city meets the sea, and resting under the latticed shadow of a burned-out hotel, there's a traffic crossing where someone has stuck a set of plastic googly eyes on one of the green men. I don't know how long these things last, but if you're around in the next few days you can probably still see it. I noticed it because I was out with my daughter and she always notices these things: a green man who stared back at us while we waited to cross the road with the rest of the human throng.

Digital Foundry | DF Weekly: "You don't need an Xbox to play Xbox" - we beg to differ
Cloud streaming quality must improve and the PC Xbox app needs an urgent revamp.
Another week, another episode of DF Direct and Microsoft's latest endeavours are our lead topics of discussion. Last week, the Xbox app for the Amazon Fire Stick 4K was released, backed by aggressive marketing from Microsoft suggesting that you don't need an Xbox to play Xbox. On a broad level, the message is accurate but based on the quality of service, things need to change significantly before we can endorse that idea, whether you're experiencing Xbox on PC or via the cloud.

Feature | The future of Twitch: safety, growth, and the importance of finding community
"I think there's a lot of positivity around Twitch right now."
The biggest headlines for Twitch this year have been focused on the past. Last month, high-profile streamer Guy "Dr Disrespect" Beahm admitted he was permanently banned from Twitch in 2020 after exchanging "messages with an individual minor back in 2017". Following reports, a former Twitch employee stated Beahm continued to send sexually explicit messages even after the minor's age was known. His admission was somewhat prompted by his removal from his own development studio.

Feature | EverQuest provided so much pain but I still love it
Anyone for a corpse run?
In the last few days, I've gone from struggling my way through Elden Ring to mourning a youth that feels ever distant. And it's all thanks to a forgotten username and a closed-down email account. That doesn't sound very exciting, does it? Let's go back a bit. The simple truth is this: Elden Ring reminds me a lot of my teenage years playing EverQuest. EverQuest was the World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 14 of its day, the day in question being the early 2000s. Launched in the UK in 2000, I came across it fashionably late, mostly because I got talked into it by someone I had a crush on. Teenage decisions, eh?
