Digital Foundry | Resident Evil Village PC is fixed - but players still deserve better
Plus: a look at the new FidelityFX Super Resolution support.
"Adjustments have been made to optimise the anti-piracy technology." It took Capcom 74 days from launch to release a patch to address the performance issues of the PC version of Resident Evil Village - an update Capcom had to deliver in the face of revelations that the pirated/cracked version of the game ran nigh-on flawlessly. And yet that single line is all the explanation those who bought and paid for the game received. We can confirm that the PC version of the game is now fixed, but the lack of explanation or indeed apology from Capcom still leaves us some way short of closure.

Recommended | The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles review - more history lesson than comedy
We're not in Japanifornica anymore.
Offering a more serious approach to Ace Attorney's courtroom battles, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles still offers a host of colourful characters and unlikely methodologies, but comes across as a very different game overall, for both good and bad. Thanks to Ace Attorney's brilliant localisation, The Great Ace Attorney's setup feels like a joke you have to explain to people: your protagonist Ryunosuke Naruhodo is supposed to be an ancestor of Phoenix Wright, who's originally named Ryuichi Naruhodo. The rename exemplifies a problem that up until very recently wasn't uncommon for Japanese media; the belief that a Japanese work's cultural connotations could confuse or overwhelm western audiences unless adopted as something else. It's a reason that's been used for not localising certain Shin Megami Tensei or Yakuza games, too.

Red Dead Online's horses have "gone wild" since update, players say
A not-so-stable release.
On 13th July, Red Dead Online received an update called Blood Money that added a number of features to the game (such as new clothing, passes and missions), but it seemingly changed something rather unexpected under the hood. The game's horses have been acting a little strange, and in some cases, are now causing terrible accidents by colliding with players. Perhaps this is all an unofficial sequel to Spirit.

Video | We tumble down a Far Cry 6 theory rabbit hole
Mapped out.
If you're looking for in-depth video coverage of the upcoming Far Cry 6 to tide you over until its launch later this year, look no further than the excellent work Eurogamer's Ian Higton has been doing in the last few months. Hot on the heels of a video in which he picks apart over 100 little details spotted in Far Cry 6's most recent gameplay reveal during E3 week (you can check it out on our YouTube channel), Ian has since turned his attention to other, shall we say, more niche potential aspects of Far Cry 6 gameplay and lore.

Recommended | F1 2021 review - old dog, new tricks
Paddock pass.
The headline news, really, is what hasn't changed. Having gained momentum over the years until it's become, for my money, one of the most complete racing game packages around, the most striking thing about this year's F1 game is that EA Sports logo when you boot it up, Codemasters having sold up to the mega-corporation earlier this year.

Recommended | Review: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD - a cloud-bound romance
Quality of 'Loft.
I'm not sure there is a more magical moment in all of Zelda than the moment you first hit a timeshift stone. For five minutes or so you've been exploring a dead world of greys and browns, moving through empty tunnels, dodging odd lumpen statues, and shoving heavy mine carts ahead of you to make progress. Then you hit the magical stone that stands in the middle of a plaza, and a bright bubble emerges. And within that bubble everything is different. The brown stones around you are now brightly painted. Nearby statues of slumped robots return to fizzing, bickering life - in truth they were never statues at all. Dead plants sprout hearts for you to take, and those mine carts now hum with energy and ghost along on electrical tracks.

Video: "Kingdom of Death", Auday Hussein's Gilgamesh-inspired Amiga game
11 minutes from an unreleased Shadow of the Beast challenger.
Back in the 1990s, Iraqi programmer and designer Auday Hussein worked on an Amiga adaptation of the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest surviving work of literature. He was kind enough to talk me through this amazing project earlier this year, discussing his first experiments with the MSX and Amiga, what it was like learning about programming in Baghdad during the rule of the Ba'ath Party, the challenges of visualising the Gilgamesh universe, and the possibility of releasing the partly completed game today.
