  1. Asus ROG Ally and ROG Ally X

Digital Foundry | Asus ROG Ally X vs ROG Ally: Hands-on with the new, improved handheld

More memory and double the battery capacity make a difference.

Asus recently announced the ROG Ally X - a refresh of last year's Ally. It's been criticised for not offering any kind of performance upgrade, but based on my experiences testing a range of PC Windows handhelds, I think it's a solid upgrade in many ways. The move from 16GB to 24GB of memory addresses issues afflicting a small but growing number of new games, while doubling the size of the battery goes a long way in sorting out the number one problem impacting every Windows handheld: the awful battery life.

  5. A character in some chainmail armour stands open armed behind a gigantic, steaming, pot of crab.

Emma's Adventures was a monthly column created for Eurogamer Supporters that ran throughout 2023. In it, Emma Kent explored online virtual worlds in a way that's become uniquely her own - usually involving an obscure pursuit in a very hostile environment. She's done dressage in Red Dead Online, been a painter in Rust, and created a real-estate business in Valheim, to name a few. And there are always unexpected twists in her tales. Some of these articles are now a year old, so rather than have them gather dust in an archive, we thought we'd open them up. We'll open a new one each month. This month's couldn't be more timely. Behold Emma's short-lived career as a crab delivery driver in . You'd think people would welcome her with open arms...

  7. A Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse Remastered screenshot showing a close-up of the dog and bunny crime-fighting duo Sam & Max as they stand out in the street.

After a long (and in my case, slightly impatient) wait, Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse - the third and regrettably final season of Telltale Games' episodic point-and-click adventure series - will be getting the remaster treatment on 14th August this year.

Wordle creator almost named his game Mr Bugs Wordys Nugz

Plus, a bit more about its development.

It's funny to think about names. If circumstances were just a tiny bit different, Chuck Spadina could have been up on stage winning over E3 by telling it how breathtaking it is; we might have all have been round the arcade giggling at a Kong Dong cabinet; or perhaps sitting down over breakfast for a quick game of Mr Bugs Wordys Nugz.

Preview | Oh no, Zenless Zone Zero is good now

    Street delighter.

You know that giddy feeling you get when a game does something unmistakably right? I felt it using the delectable Grappleshot in Halo Infinite for the first time; when floating through a trippy music video-like sequence in Control; and when fighting the beautifully horrific Hyperion boss to ethereal organ tunes in Returnal. Perfectly preserved memories I reach for when I need a reminder on how good games can be. Imagine my surprise then when that giddy mood resurfaced during a hands-on preview for Zenless Zone Zero, Genshin Impact developer miHoYo's upcoming release. Something I already previewed during its second beta - and had a lot of issues with at the time.

Last year, in an exclusive interview with Eurogamer on the future of Football Manager, Sports Interactive gaffer Miles Jacobson described those big changes, particularly those coming to the game's UI, as "the most dangerou changes you can make - because people who have muscle memory of knowing exactly where to go won't have that anymore"

  20. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD key art.

I don't think we talk enough about texture in video games. Not textures in the sense of art assets placed on surfaces to create the illusion of three-dimensional spaces, but texture as a thing that emerges through the whole of the game experience. Weirdly, though, when I think about a lot of really good games, my first thoughts aren't images or words, but exactly this texture thing: a sort of memory of how the game as a whole feels, what the over-riding sensation it creates seems to be.

Feature | What we've been playing - Arthurian sandboxes, old favourites, and Connections

A few of the things that have us hooked this week.

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've been playing over the past few days. This week, we drop into a new fantasy MMO that's something of a social experiment; we go back to an old favourite via something of a Director's Cut; and getting the obscure categories first.

  23. Concord official image showing a character in a helmet with a rocket launcher from below, in front of a red moon and bright green cloudy sky.

Everything else aside, Concord definitely throws up an interesting question. Does doing every distinct, individual part of a game as well as it can be done lead to a good game in itself? We're a step away from "what makes a good game?" here, a mountain-sized can of worms. A worm volcano. Not going near that one - but Concord does make me wonder.
