  11. Realistic sword fighting is back in Hellish Quart, and we're rubbish at it

Bertie: Oh gosh oh gosh oh gosh, I finally get to tell you I did sword fighting in real-life! I would go to a small school gymnasium each week, cover myself in a mix of cricket padding and fencing equipment, and then hit other people (who were part of the class, obviously!) with a big blade. A longsword, actually. A big metal longsword. Cool, huh! (Sussex Sword Academy, if you're ever interested.)

  12. If On A Winter's Night, Four Travellers is a sumptuously grim little mystery

Starting a game like If On A Winter's Night, Four Travellers I can't help but feel as though I'm going to miss a few important references. The name, after all, is a reference to Italo Calvino's novel If On A Winter's Night, A Traveller - which I haven't read, but know to be, apparently, a kind of reflexive post-modernist novel, in second-person, about you trying to read a novel called If On A Winter's Night, A Traveller. A reference to a thing that self-references, which I have just discovered by Googling. I'm already struggling.

  13. Call of the Sea: Lovecraft, new studios, and the legacy of Myst

Interview | Call of the Sea: Lovecraft, new studios, and the legacy of Myst

"It isn't a descent into madness, it's a rise to sanity."

Call of the Sea was one of my favourite games of 2020. Even when I think about it now, I feel warmer. Partly that's to do with the literal warmth of the tropical island setting, but I think more of it is to do with the gentle nature of the game. It's a game without combat, a game about puzzles. A game with an eerie mystery pulling you farther in. It's an adventure played at walking speed, both metaphorically and literally. And I relish that. I relish an adventure I can sink into like a comfy armchair each evening, one that doesn't rough me up and shake me around before I sleep. I wish more games were like it.

  20. Prey and Dishonored on Series X|S: FPS Boost isn't just about 60fps

Digital Foundry | Prey and Dishonored on Series X|S: FPS Boost isn't just about 60fps

The games play better and loading time reductions are a revelation.

As part of its celebration in acquiring Bethesda, Microsoft's second wave of FPS Boost titles for Xbox Series consoles sees the delivery of some dramatic upgrades for classic titles from its newly assimilated publisher. Heavy hitters Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 will get the Digital Foundry treatment in due course, but to begin with we wanted to revisit Dishonored Definitive Edition and Prey from Arkane Studios. These are both brilliant games, but they're also somewhat sub-optimal in their original console incarnations. FPS Boost dramatically transforms the both of them - and what's fascinating is that it's not just the doubling of frame-rate that is key in improving the experience. Remarkably, FPS Boost goes further than you might expect to the point where with Prey in particular, I feel we're close to remaster territory.

  30. The making of Devotion, China's least favourite horror game

Interview | The making of Devotion, China's least favourite horror game

"We want the public to know we will continue our work."

Red Candle's Devotion is one of the finest horror games of the past decade, and if you haven't played it already, it's possible you never will. Following its release this spring, the game was found to contain an unflattering reference to China's president, Xi Jinping. The discovery sparked an outcry among Chinese players, leading to the withdrawal of Chinese distributors, the closure of Red Candle's account on Weibo, one of China's largest social media platforms, and the removal of the game from Steam in China. Red Candle, which is based in Taiwan, has apologised at length for what it says was a placeholder asset, accidentally transferred to the final release. These comments were not enough to stem the backlash, however, and a week after sale, the developer pulled the game from Steam in all territories to perform unspecified fixes. Seven months on, it's unclear whether Devotion will ever see daylight again.
