Feature | How M2 went back to the Game Gear for its magnum opus
Aleste'd development.
Modern games based on the perceived technical limitations of vintage systems are not uncommon. However, it takes a certain kind of courage - maybe even a tiny little bit of madness - to not only emulate the look and feel of yesteryear's classics, but to produce games for systems long past their prime. While such endeavours do happen in the indie- and homebrew-sector, it's unheard of for bigger companies to dabble in this sort of development. Nintendo, Square Enix or SNK might happily re-release their back catalogues in various physical or digital formats, it's unlikely they would ever go back to their old devkits.

Feature | Forget movies - games have much more in common with theatre
Live action.
The first time the Asylum Demon came crashing down to greet me in Dark Souls, I actually made a noise: the kind of pathetic mewl of protest you might let out after decanting a mug of hot coffee onto your keyboard. Really, can you blame me? The timing is divine, holding back just long enough to let you feel safe, beckoned in further by those inviting double doors. And then BAM. Corpse pancake.

Here are some of the wackiest Valheim builds so far
Stave another day.
Valheim's been out for a whole three weeks, so of course that means players have already constructed many outrageous builds that make my longhouse look like a garden shed. Although the Viking survival game places an emphasis on crafting old Scandinavian architecture, that hasn't stopped players from creating some seriously sci-fi structures - along with towers so enormous they seem to defy the laws of physics. So here's a round-up of some of the best and most outrageous builds from over the past few weeks.

Yesterday's news that original video game development at Sony's Japan Studio was ceasing wasn't so much a surprise - Gravity Rush and Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama departed late last year, taking some of his team with him to form new studio Bokeh, while there's been a steady stream of other departures ever since - even if it still felt desperately sad.

Feature | Stonefly knows that mechs and bugs are the same beautiful thing
Micrographia.
It's hard to pass up the opportunity to look at a pinecone. Really look at it. The edges, the many angled surfaces, so compact and shielding, but with a sense of this rich inner country, forever out of view. It helps, as a maths friend once told me, that pinecones are an absolute riot of primes. Anyway, if you like to look at pinecones, you're probably going to like Stonefly. It's a game about nature, up close, and although it's fantastical it's also really about how nature is pretty fantastical in the first place.

It was also the night that the skeletons came to life.
This game casts a spell. A very particular spell. It is hard as they come, punishing, brutal, unforgiving in its challenge. And yet I love it still. It's not just difficult. It has a perspective on difficulty. It makes its sheer level of horribleness first endearing and then thrilling.

Digital Foundry | We played Cyberpunk 2077 PC on an Xbox One CPU
Unbelievably, it works - but is it playable?
Since the arrival of Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the dividing line between PC and console technology has become more of a blur - both last-gen and current-gen hardware from Microsoft and Sony are effectively integrated, customised PCs. Profoundly illustrating this is the arrival in Far Eastern markets of a PC motherboard that's actually based around the Xbox One processor. We've acquired one, tested it, and even run Cyberpunk 2077 on it - so what we have we learned from this bizarre experience?
