Supporters | Game of the Week: A battle for prog greatness
No flutes, alas.
Games have always been a bit prog - that's prog as in prog rock. They've always been in love with wizards and capes and colours flowing together, and probably with flutes too if you know where to look. Up until now, though, I think the prog-est moment I ever encountered in a game came in God of Blades.

Feature | Elden Ring's new inventory features are a game changer
Tools of the trade.
I play like a Hoover. I explore the The Lands Between while hammering the button to acquire new materials. In all honesty, I've barely bothered with crafting unless I really need to, but all those leaves, stones, shards of bone, and strips of meat? They get sucked straight up into my inventory regardless.

Video | 7 bizarre Easter Eggs from across the Perfect Dark series
Joanna give this video a watch, that's for sure!

Digital Foundry | What have we learned from Perfect Dark's gameplay reveal trailer?
A very early tech breakdown of a highly promising Xbox title.
The art of the reveal is a difficult thing - and in our current industry, most publishers prefer trailers packed with pre-rendered CGI or snippets captured across the game. Yet, I've always preferred a different approach: a linear series of events showcasing what's possible in the game. This style was memorably used to reveal Metal Gear Solid 2, along with titles like Halo 2, Doom 3, The Last of Us and Killzone: Shadow Fall. It's designed to showcase the gameplay vision of a title contained within a single location - a way to help the player understand what sort of game the developer is building. With the reboot of Perfect Dark, finally shown during this year's Xbox showcase, I was thrilled to see a return to this format.

Preview | My first hands on with The Plucky Squire was one of the most joyful experiences in ages
Knights in delightful spaces.
Joy is a bit underrated, I reckon, but at Summer Game Fest this year it felt like the closest thing to a running theme. Astro Bot and Lego Horizon Adventures were both a breeze, playful, ebullient family games that put all their focus on simply being a good time. The Plucky Squire, an action game with a domestic dimension hopping twist, however, probably just pipped them to the position of first, in the race to be the most joyful experience I had all week.

Feature | Everything announced in the Nintendo Direct
Zelda! Metroid Prime 4! Stray! Did we mention playable Zelda?
The Nintendo Direct for June 2024 has been and gone! Sure we had to wait over a month (and were then only given 24 hours notice, classic Nintendo), but it was worth it. Well worth it subjectively, I'm sure there are some disappointment people out there. (Look, we'd all like to play Silksong. Hopefully it will be out next year. Or the year after that...) Anyways, in case you missed June 2024's Nintendo Direct or simply want to revisit the announcements - look no further as you'll find it all below.

Feature | Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D is the excuse I need to properly play this iconic series
Slimy yet satisfying.
Firstly, a confession: despite being a huge Final Fantasy fan, and fan of the genre overall, I've never played a Dragon Quest game - much to my shame. The first Dragon Quest (released in 1986) is the original, pioneering JRPG and the success of the series is a huge reason why the genre is so popular. But so far, it's passed me by.
